Skill Level: Open to all
Concept: Create three-dimensional paintings
using contemporary painting techniques and
concepts. We emphasize the fundamentals
of artistic expression as students learn how
materials and process affect the physical and
conceptual aspects of their work.
Concept: Open up your practice, push to
experiment and do things you have never done
before. Risk-taking and chance drive this painting workshop as you work quickly and intuitively within a rigorous conceptual structure.
We make multiple paintings each day starting
from loose formal or structural parameters.
From there, the direction is up to you! Serious group and individual critiques address the
formal and conceptual concerns that emerge
from this spontaneous way of working.
Concept: The ancient Chinese arts of calligraphy and black ink painting require mental, physical and spiritual unity. Brush strokes must have
energy and strength combined with “active
empty space” to achieve an effective composition. The art of black ink shares the same
materials as calligraphy: brush, sumi ink and
handmade paper. Experience this unique twodimensional art as sumi-e art forms expand in
the Western world.
Sculpture as Painting
Media & Techniques: We use acrylic paint
as our primary painting medium with mixedmedia techniques.
Activities: We begin by creating a threedimensional base or frame. Then we stretch
canvas over the frame and prepare the surface. Finally, we paint the surface to complete
the work.
Faculty: Kaz Oshiro currently lives and works
in Los Angeles. He studied art at the California
State College where he earned a BA in 1998

His solo shows include Yvon Lambert in New
York, Rosamund Felsen in Santa Monica, Clear
Gallery in Tokyo, as well as galleries in Brussels, Paris and Las Vegas. He has taken part
in recent group exhibitions including Prospect
1 in New Orleans, Gagosian Gallery in New
York, Tate St. Ives, CAPC-Musee d’art contemporain in Bordeaux, France and L.A. Louver in
Venice, California.
Tuition: $675 / Studio Support Cost: $875

a quick-drying medium such as Galkyd.
Activities: We paint every day and hold a number of critiques to discuss the work we are
making. Painting continues outside of class.
