Woodturning for the
Absolute Beginner
Jason Schneider
Skill Level: I - II
Concept: Let the chips fly as you explore spindle turning with kiln-dried wood! Then make
smooth buttery cuts with fresh-cut green
wood to make bowls. Take home three to five
finished projects and a solid understanding of
basic woodturning techniques.
Media & Techniques: Our medium is wood:
both green and dry. Techniques include spindle
(between-center) and bowl turning, and a variety of texturing and finishing techniques.
Activities: After a brief introduction to the
tools and techniques of woodturning – and a
short overview of safe working habits – we
demonstrate and discuss how turned objects
are used in daily life. Slide talks explore the
potential of these objects. We spend a majority of our time on individual projects.
Faculty: Jason Schneider received his
MFA in Furniture Design from San Diego
State University. He is currently the Woodworking Program Coordinator at Anderson Ranch. He exhibits his work nationally.

Turning Out Furniture
Brad Reed Nelson
Finding Your Voice: technique,
material and imagination
Christian Burchard
Skill Level: I - III
Concept: Advance your basic turning skills by
building small tables and stools with a wood
lathe. Explore designs based on form, function,
color and material. Learn techniques such as
faceplate turning and turning between centers.
We end by discussing the success of each piece
based on form, function and craftsmanship.
Media & Techniques: Our medium is wood
and our techniques include turning on a lathe.
Activities: We begin with slides and a quick
demonstration of turning-based furniture. We
select materials and begin the building process. Joinery demonstrations continue through
the week as situations arise.
Faculty: Brad Nelson is a professional furniture designer and founder of Board By Design,
a functional design company that has been
in the Roaring Fork Valley for nine years. He
has taught at Anderson Ranch many times.

Tuition: $775 / Studio Support Cost: $975
Studio Fee: $95 Code: W0713 Enrollment Limit: 8
Skill Level: III - IV
Concept: When do we impose our will on the
material and when do we allow it to speak for
itself? When should we relinquish excessive
control and let the internal properties of the wood
take over? Learn to take risks and allow failure as
you delve into material and process. Improvise
and experiment. Create your own language and
practice the technical skills to express.
Media & Techniques: Our medium is wood:
green hardwoods and a limited quantity of
Madrone Burl. We use a variety of woodturning techniques.
Activities: Activities include short demonstrations, discussions and hands-on practice, all
focused on exploring designs and developing
a personal vision. Plenty of time is reserved
for turning.
Faculty: Christian Burchard completed a furniture apprenticeship in Hamburg, Germany, and
studied sculpture at the School of the Museum
of Fine Arts, Boston, and Emily Carr College in
Vancouver, British Columbia. He has been a fulltime studio woodturner and teacher since 1982.
His work is included in numerous permanent
collections including the Oregon Arts Commission, the Smithsonian Institution and the Royal
Cultural Center in Jedda, Saudi Arabia. He has
been featured in publications such as American
Craft, American Woodturner and The Fine Art
of Wood. www.burchardstudio.com
