In summer 2009, student surveys revealed: • 96% of our summer workshop participants were extremely satisfied with the Ranch campus and setting, • 90% were extremely satisfied with their overall experience, • 90% were extremely satisfied with the teaching ability of our faculty and interns, and • 90% were extremely satisfied with the “overall value” of their summer workshop. Concept:  Explore traditional and innovative techniques to work with wood. Investigate those that intrigue you most and develop them further in a chosen furniture form. An open mind, sharp wit and good humor are essentials for this course. Media & Techniques: We use kiln-dried wood, and hand and machine tools. Activities: We have daily demonstrations, lectures, design exercises and hands-on studio time. Project designs are discussed and analyzed. Use of hand and machine tools is covered in depth. Faculty: Stephen Proctor earned his MA in furniture design from the Royal College of Art in England and was Dean of the Wendell Castle School in New York for many years. He has taught many workshops at Anderson Ranch. Concept: Engage in an imaginative and physical experience with the powerful domestic landscape of furniture objects. We explore work that falls between function and sculpture, between practical construction and theoretical ideas. This is a master class where students gain skills with the material and observe the faculty working in the studio. Media & Techniques: We introduce metalworking techniques from the hand hammer and tig welder to the slip roller. We use drafting, scale modeling, pattern making, welding, jig making, forging and abrasives for metal. Activities:  Class time is split between idea building (discussion, drawing and critique) and physical building (technical demonstration, design problem-solving and studio work time). We discuss proportion, ergonomics, history, material experimentation and design theory. We have technical demonstrations, critiques and slide presentations that delve into the ideas of personal and private, intimacy and performance, ergonomics and play, all exploring the nature of how furniture affects us. Faculty:  Vivian Beer received her MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Her works have been shown at Penland Gallery, North Carolina; Wexler Gallery, Pennsylvania; William Zimmer Gallery, California. www.vivianbeer.com   Brad Reed Nelson is a professional furniture designer and founder of Board By Design, a functional design company that has been in the Roaring Fork Valley, Colorado for nine years. www.boardbydesign.com Tuition: $995 / Studio Support Cost: $1395 Studio Fee: $145  Code: W1524  Enrollment Limit: 12 18  w w w.anderson ranch.org 9 7 0 /9 2 3 -3 1 8 1 i n fo @ a n d ers o n r a n c h . o r g Tuition: $925 / Studio Support Cost: $1325 Studio Fee: $145  Code: S1515  Enrollment Limit: 10 O e L a L i n e L p b a w h t L k h y t d C w
