Concept: Incorporate and experiment with
color while carving in wood. Students create
small objects (such as mirror frames or band
saw boxes) to use as their “canvas”. We make
sample boards to explore the different possibilities of surface embellishment. There are
discussions on color theory as well as demonstrations using different paints, mixing color,
embellishing surfaces and finishing.
Concept: Welcome to woodworking! Explore
simple, classic and experimental construction
in wood, beginning with how wood works and
its material properties. Cut, join and build using
half-laps and mortise and tenon joinery. Experiment with chance, push, pull, and how-far-willit-go-before-it-breaks. We open new windows,
assess chance, cross the line and come back
using history and tradition as our guides, yet
also breaking new ground.
Mirrors & Boxes: possibilities
Media & Techniques: We work in wood, painting, carving and conceptualizing. We explore
different ways of decorating wood. A variety
of woodworking techniques and safe practices
are emphasized.
Activities: There are daily demonstrations;
we paint and carve sample boards, construct
mirror frames and band saw boxes, learn how
to sharpen chisels and carving tools, explore a
variety of finishes. In addition to technical demonstrations, we discuss machine safety.
faculty: Jenna Goldberg has a BFA in illustration from University of the Arts in Philadelphia
and studied furniture design at San Diego
State University and The Genoa School. She
received her MFA in Furniture Design from
RISD. Currently, she is an instructor in the
Industrial Design Department at RISD. Jenna
is represented in the permanent collections
of the Renwick Gallery and the Mint Museum
of Craft and Design. She recently had a oneperson show at Gallery NAGA in Boston, Massachusetts. www.jennagoldbergstudio.com
