The Furniture Design and Woodworking
program unites exciting workshops with
extraordinary faculty. Workshops range from
traditional woodworking and woodturning to
innovative approaches in contemporary art
and design. If you want to advance your skills
and expand your creative imagination, then
we have a workshop for you.
The Maloof Wood Barn has first-rate
equipment featuring a large machine room,
bench rooms, a spacious design studio
and a turning studio. Students in furniture
construction classes each have Europeanstyle workbenches and tool storage. The
Loft Studio, for design and interdisciplinary
workshops, is equipped with workbenches
and light woodworking equipment.

Fundamentals of
Woodworking: tools, techniques
Jason Schneider
Skill Level: I - III
Skill Level: I - II
Concept: Build your confidence with a solid
knowledge of basic woodworking techniques.
Learn to safely choose the right wood, the right
tool and the right joint. Explore the fundamentals of good design and personal expression in
woodworking. Whether you have no experience in woodworking or you have been away
from the wood shop for a while, you will leave
inspired to tackle new challenges!
Media & Techniques: Media includes wood,
paint and finishing products. Techniques include
the necessary joinery used to construct a table,
stool or bench of your own design.
Activities: Technical demonstrations and skill
building exercises help you choose the right
joint, in the right wood, in the right place, for
the right result. Hands-on practice builds confidence in the shop (and is a lot of fun).
Faculty: Jason Schneider received his
MFA in Furniture Design from San Diego
State University. He is currently the Woodworking Program Coordinator at Anderson Ranch. He exhibits his work nationally.

Concept: Investigate construction and form
beginning with thin strips of wood that are
glued, lashed or woven together. The result is
both functional and sculptural: a strong, lightweight, hollow wood form. All experience levels learn simple construction methods, exploring and building volumetric forms.
Media & Techniques: Media includes solid
wood, thin veneer strips, bamboo, superglue,
tape, string and wire. Techniques include steam
bending, laminating, wrapping and lashing.
Activities: Activities include slide presentations, discussions, progress reviews, experimentation and developing personal interests.
Faculty: Andy Buck is a graduate of the Rhode
Island School of Design and Virginia Commonwealth University. His work brings together
traditional craftsmanship and investigations in
form and richly painted surfaces. Andy is represented by Pritam & Eames in East Hampton, New York and is published in a number of
books and magazines. He has been invited to
