Learn to construct armatures, sectionalize a sculpture and basic drying and firing in large scale. We also cover how to install a work indoors or outdoors. Concept: Explore forms through wheel throwing and coil building. Projects cover a range of forms including covered jars, pitchers, bowls, teapots and plates. The focus of this workshop will be on using the simplest of techniques to create an infinite variety of possibilities. Students will take home new skills in coil building and throwing. Concept: Pots for daily use cover a broad spectrum: from those distilled to their essential material to the highly manipulated and elaborate. We address different ways of approaching materials (line, volume and scale) and ideas (aesthetics, historical reference and function). Expand and refine your work by altering clay thrown on the wheel and creating surface in atmospheric kilns. Experiment with glazing techniques, surface drawing and creating texture. Media & Techniques:  We use coarse stoneware clay, stained porcelain for accent colors and gas reduction firing. Activities:  We demonstrate specific fabrication techniques throughout the course. Lectures are illustrated with the instructor’s detailed drawings of armatures, bolting systems and installations methods. We explain clay types and their application and firing programs and theories. Faculty: John Toki was formerly a faculty member at the California College of the Arts and a staff member at the European Ceramic Work Center, Holland. He has installed large-scale freestanding ceramic sculptures and murals for the cities of Berkeley, Oakland, San Francisco and Sacramento. Presently John is working at Building Products, Phoenix, Arizona, a division of Mission Clay, where he is building twenty-feet tall clay pipe sculptures. Since 1974 he has maintained a studio in Richmond, California. In addition to his studio practice he has co-authored three books, including Hands in Clay (5th edition). Tuition: $995 / Studio Support Cost: $1395 Studio Fee: $155  Code: C1214  Enrollment Limit: 12 Media & Techniques: We will use terra cotta and white earthenware clays, slips, terra-sigillata and glazes.
