SKILL LEVEL: Open to all
SKILL LEVEL: I - III
CONCEPT: Welding is both an instrument of
assembly and a means of artistic expression.
In this workshop we explore the fundamentals
of metal fabrication and their impact on a multitude of studio practices. Whether using steel
as a medium or in conjunction with other materials, we learn the proper tools and techniques
for achieving our sculptural objectives. We create several small projects utilizing new skills to
build a final project of our own choosing.
CONCEPT: There’s often splendor in the ordinary and magic in the discarded. From inspiration, preparatory sketches and maquettes to
construction and final presentations, we build
sculptural objects from layers of found and
repurposed materials. Beginning with simple
wooden or wire mesh armatures, we sew,
patch, bind, stiffen, wrap and layer varieties of
materials as a means to shape narrative and
assemble works with convincing physicality.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Steel tube, angle,
rod plate and sheet. Paper and cardboard
maquettes are used to design and troubleshoot. Fundamentals of oxy/acetylene torches,
arc welding systems and plasma cutting. Safe
use of hand tools, power tools and machinery.
Technical demonstrations on cutting, bending,
rolling and finishing steel.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Fabric, sewing, joining,
gluing, cardboard, wire mesh, wood, hardware, paint, wire cutting, power and hand cutting wood, scoring, bending and drilling.
Welding for Artists
ACTIVITIES: Presentations on the varieties,
applications and history of welding. Daily technical demonstrations followed by work time
and individual student assistance.
FACULTY: Evan Blackstock is a visual artist
who works at the University of Colorado Boulder. He co-teaches sculpture classes
working with metal and leads workshops on
welding systems, machinery use and fabrication techniques. Working with many different
materials on a daily basis, Evan also serves as
a consultant and fabricator for various university projects.

Fabric & Physicality
ACTIVITIES: We meet daily for demonstrations,
workshop exercises and slide presentations.
Feedback and brainstorming. Individual conversations to assist students in fostering concepts, projects and processes. Most of our
class time is spent investigating and constructing work, followed by a final group critique.
FACULTY: Elisabeth Higgins O’Connor received
her MFA from UC Davis. She is the recipient
of a Joan Mitchell Foundation MFA Grant, and
has exhibited at the CUE Arts Foundation,
the Armory Center for the Arts and the San
Jose Institute for Contemporary Art. Her work

SKILL LEVEL: Open to all
CONCEPT: The nature of fabric allows its freedom to float, contour or delineate form. This
course examines the contemporary resurgence of traditional craft to explore 3-D forms
and sculptural interventions. Recently re-envisioned histories of hand work and conceptual
craft are introduced as we observe form and
material inspired
