Sculptural Plates, Big Prints
Charles Cohan
SKILL LEVEL: II
CONCEPT: Inexpensive and readily available
materials, sustainable and re-purposed supplies, and the ability to make prints at a larger
scale all inspire new discoveries of the printed
matrix. Students explore a combination of
mainstream and alternative mark making tools
and techniques. We examine both constructive
and reductive processes in the development of
the printing matrix as we utilize a large-scale,
topographic approach mirrored by the ability to
print relief or intaglio.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: The use of non-traditional tools for the inscription of marks upon
MDF and plywood, including carving, hammering, grinding, stamping, sanding, burning, collaging, gluing and varnishing. Inking and press
operation.
ACTIVITIES: Students develop surface textures
on printing and ink plates, and learn how to
use the press. Daily demonstrations, technical
assistance and conceptual feedback from the
instructor is paired with ample studio time.

SKILL LEVEL: III - IV (basic knowledge of multiple
printmaking methods required)
CONCEPT: This workshop explores techniques
and strategies for creating work that combines traditional and non-traditional print-based
media. Additionally, we’ll investigate ways of
combining printed media with other types,
such as drawings, paintings and 3-D work. The
art created in this course requests openness to
the possibility of how printed media can function from a framed image on a wall to a wide
range of other contexts.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Screen printing, photolithography, digital printmaking and monotype
mediums with a variety of techniques designed
according to individual needs and group flow.
ACTIVITIES: We begin every day with a demonstration and end with a recap to discuss
our work. Demonstrations focus on how to
combine techniques and generate images to
achieve creative goals. We spend the majority
of time working individually on class projects.
FACULTY: Charles Cohan received his MFA
in printmaking from Cranbrook Academy of
Art. He has taught workshops at the Pilchuck
Glass School, Pyramid Atlantic Art Center, and
Whanganui Polytechnic in New Zealand. He
has received the Honolulu Printmakers Award
and the Hawai’i State Foundation on Culture
and the Arts Acquisition Award. He currently
chairs the printmaking department at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa in Honolulu.
