The Transformative Experience
of Encaustic Painting

SKILL LEVEL: IV, portfolio review required
SKILL LEVEL: Open to all
CONCEPT: What is contemporary? It’s a question being asked today in philosophy, art history, aesthetics and politics. This workshop
offers the opportunity to develop a contemporary context for our work. How is this question
involved in our idea of art? And what visual languages can we use to formulate these ideas?
To consider the question of what contemporary
is, we don’t seek one, prescribed definition.
Rather, we find ways into an embattled terrain,
unraveling its various lines, identifying points
of divergence, strengths or fragility, in a kind
of map that opens a laboratory for research,
questioning and conceptual experimentation.
Rigorous questioning is aimed at revealing the
relationship between the work we create and
the world in which we live.
CONCEPT: Originally used in ancient Egypt to
decorate sarcophagi, encaustic is used by artists today impressionistically, abstractly and
conceptually. Working in encaustic can be a
transformative experience that creates a whole
new way of thinking about painting. This unique
paint medium combines molten wax with pigments to produce rich luminosity and translucency. Using heat, wax and color, we experiment and discover new approaches while
reinventing our personal artistic expression.
The Structured Accident
SKILL LEVEL: III
CONCEPT: Ready to open up your practice, push
yourself to experiment and do things you have
never done before? Risk-taking and chance
drive this painting workshop as we work
quickly and intuitively within a rigorous conceptual structure. We make multiple paintings
each day, starting from loose, formal or structural parameters. From there, the direction is
up to us. Daily group critiques and individual
discussions address the particular and conceptual concerns that emerge from this spontaneous way of working.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students use their preferred paint medium, oil or acrylic on canvas.
If oil paint is used, students may choose to
use a quick-drying medium such as Galkyd or
Galkyd Lite.
ACTIVITIES: Students paint and critique every
day. Painting continues outside of class.
FACULTY: Allison Miller received her MFA from
UCLA. She is represented by Susan Inglett
Gallery and has shown at ACME Gallery in
Los Angeles. She was recently included in
“Made in L.A., 2012,” produced by the Hammer Museum and LAXART, and has exhibited
in many group venues, including the Orange
County Museum of Art, Gagosian Gallery and
D’Amelio Terras. In 2009, she was featured
in “Painting Abstraction: New Elements in
Abstract Painting.” Allison has taught at UCLA,
UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC San Diego and
Claremont Graduate University.
