Turning Elegant & Decorative
Hollow Forms
J. Paul Fennell
SKILL LEVEL: II - IV
CONCEPT: Ready to expand your own expressive vocabulary? Learn how to turn elegant
hollow forms and embellish them with new
and creative decorative techniques. We focus
on developing a sense of how subtle changes
in the vessel’s line, volume and proportion
can dramatically alter elements of our work.
Emphasis is on enhancing our designs through
texturing, carving and piercing.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Turning and embellishing
hollow forms in wood. Hollowing techniques,
design and layout techniques for texturing,
carving and piercing. Creating basket weave
designs, patterns and incised carving on vessel
surfaces. Techniques to gauge wall thickness
appropriate for carving and piercing.
ACTIVITIES: Introduction and short demonstrations. Embellishment processes and specific
tool uses. We explore many design ideas,
concepts and techniques, then apply those to
our daily work. Open forums and class discussions of daily accomplishments at the end of
each day.
FACULTY: J. Paul Fennell has been turning wood
for over 40 years. His work resides in many
private collections and several museums,
including the Smithsonian, Museum of Arts
and Design, Detroit Institute of Arts, and the

movement, flexion and muscle access; guided
visualizations and using the mind’s eye as a
resource for design development. The week
includes concentrated work in the turning
studio, slide presentations and discussions
of photography, marketing, design influences,
aesthetics and philosophy.
