Basic Bowl Turning
SKILL LEVEL: I - II
CONCEPT: Bowl turning is one of the most
popular forms of woodturning, but it can be
a difficult process to master. Allen guides this
class through the entire process of bowl making, from log to finished work. He demystifies
the bowl gouge and makes it an effective and
efficient wood-removal tool. Since pretty wood
only takes us so far, we concentrate on good
design and decorative techniques to set our
work apart.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Wood; green and air-dried
bowl blanks. Techniques include proper wood
selection, correct use of the bowl gouge and
body positions; sanding, drying, various decorative techniques, sharpening and finishing.
ACTIVITIES: After a basic introduction to tools,
woods and techniques, Allen demonstrates his
craft and guides the class through each step of
the process. Intensive turning sessions allow
students to develop skills and techniques. Discussions at various points along the way illustrate our progress.
FACULTY: Allen Jensen has been a woodturner
for 17 years and a professional bowl maker for
the last seven. He is the current symposium
director for the Rocky Mountain Woodturning
Symposium in Loveland, Colo. He has presented at the Utah Symposium, AAW in St.
Paul and Louisville, and the Rocky Mountain
Symposium. His work is available in fine craft
galleries across the country.
Tuition: $675 OR Tuition + Studio Support Donation: $875
Studio Fee: $95 Code: W0507 Enrollment Limit 8
Multi Axis Turning:
Barbara Dill
SKILL LEVEL: II - IV
CONCEPT: This class offers a way to understand
and plan multi axis spindle turning and discover
other ways to mount wood between centers
to make asymmetrical objects. Rather than
replicating an instructor’s model, we learn the
variables and outcomes of multi axis spindle
turning and then decide how to create our own
unique designs.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Green and dry wood. All
turning is done between centers. Safe turning
techniques, tool usage and design ideas are
addressed. Split and square turning techniques
are also explored.
