SKILL LEVEL: II - IV
Concept: This is a chair workshop for the brave
and foolhardy. Why four legs: why legs at all?
Participants in this seating intensive are introduced to a variety of chairs that explore traditional and nontraditional solutions to one of the
most elemental products in furniture design.
Students are expected to work through design
variations, decide on final plans, and build their
own chairs as prototypes.
CONCEPT: Furniture is site-specific to the body
in an intimate way. Our relationship to industrial processes and materials is both personal
and daunting. The emotive impact of mixing
these relationships to create one-of-a-kind
works imparts a complicated power. This class
takes us through Vivian’s techniques and her
thought processes around merging these two
culturally-charged worlds. We delve into the
ideas of personal and private, intimacy and performance, ergonomics and play. Together we
explore how we can affect materials and how
furniture and materials can affect us.

MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: This is a tradition-based
woodworking course that utilizes stationary
equipment, portable power tools and hand
tools. Our material is wood. Students who
wish to include found objects and other materials are accommodated as long as they follow
basic studio rules for machine and tool usage.
ACTIVITIES: Mornings are reserved for slide
talks, demonstrations and design reviews.
Afternoons are reserved for one-on-one talks
and plenty of work time in the studio. Students
can expect to work afternoons and evenings
on their final projects.
FACULTY: Alphonse Mattia has taught furniture design and making in numerous colleges
and universities, workshops and residencies.
He has received artist’s fellowships from the
Massachusetts Artists Foundation and the
NEA. His work is in many private and permanent collections such as the Museum of Art
and Design, the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery, Philadelphia Museum of Fine Arts, the
Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Yale University
Art Gallery and Carnegie Museum of Art.
