Topics covered included: advanced camera functions, an introduction to the use of flash, user-friendly lighting techniques, compositional elements of photography, and shooting a thematic series. Daily critique and shooting sessions in the picturesque Rocky Mountains address technical and aesthetic considerations, with an aim to inspire and challenge students to make conscious decisions as they use their cameras to produce compelling photographs. CONCEPT: Spend a dynamic day photographing some of the most scenic landscapes in the Rocky Mountains: sites near Aspen and Snowmass with mountain views, sparkling streams, a multitude of wildflowers and 100-year-old artifacts from bygone mining days. This “photographer’s dream tour” reveals many possibilities that may be revisited later with in-depth visual exploration. CONCEPT: This workshop investigates different ways of representing time in photographs. Photography is a medium particularly well suited to exploring time: the passage of time, measurement of time, changes brought by time’s passage, and the duration of experiences. We delve into the meaning of time as conveyed by photographs produced through independent and collaborative works. Mark shares methods used in his projects and addresses ideas of time on a human scale, engaging our participation in, and observation of, our daily lives. Digital Photography: MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Digital camera with manual exposure capabilities, compatible flash, Adobe Lightroom to import, view and critique images. ACTIVITIES: Interactive classroom sessions and daily shooting assignments that build on the day’s lessons provide a deeper understanding of the tools and techniques available in digital photography. We learn to create more confident and thoughtful photographs. FACULTY: Blake Fitch has photographed extensively in the U.S. and Central and South America, receiving numerous grants including support from Kodak and Calumet Photographic.
