Manarola, Cinque Terre September 29 - October 6, 2013 Discover Cinque Terre Ed Kashi SKILL LEVEL: II - IV concept: Cinque Terre links five medieval villages along northern Italy’s Riviera through an enchanting labyrinth of walking trails. Tiny communities, each with their own distinct dialects and heritage, endured centuries of feudal rule to emerge as dream destinations, featuring fine Ligurian cuisine and stunning views along a steep, terraced coastline.   We explore the five villages between Monterosso and Riomaggiore by train, ferry and foot. We traverse the low, cliffside route between villages and detour occasionally to dramatic hilltop sanctuaries. From our base in Monterosso al Mare, we explore new ways to tell stories with greater authorship and control. This workshop focuses on how to create a personal documentary project in a land of rich culture, magnificent views and infinite photographic opportunities.   Our ultimate goal is to discover a subject that speaks to a personal passion and document it in a compelling and unique visual style. Expect discussions and practical experience for richer storytelling, image editing and narrative development.   Additional topics include managing digital workflow, creating multimedia projects and developing a portfolio. Ed works personally with 10  Walking path, Cinque Terre students in the field. The workshop includes individual and group reviews, personal assignments and lots of fun. Our aim is to raise our awareness and spark our creativity so that we return home not only with images to be proud of, but with newfound skills to improve and expand our overall photographic technique. We strike a balance between fieldwork and critiques, technical and aesthetic material, and the freedom to explore and photograph this spectacular region.   We recommend flying to Genoa or Pisa which have good train connections to Cinque Terre. We suggest that students book accommodations in the old town section of Monterosso al Mare, as this will be our base for the workshop. A detailed list of hotel suggestions can be found on our website. faculty:  Ed Kashi is a photojournalist, filmmaker and educator dedicated to documenting the social and political issues that define our times.
