Concept: Learn digital photography, camera
function and image editing while creating a
fantastic narrative. Working from written passages by a favorite author or poet, or from
original written material, we use text works to
construct a visual story. We use the camera
to achieve a desired effect, adding props and
costumes for dramatic emphasis. Students
gain confidence operating their cameras and
engaging in the creative process.
Media & Techniques: Digital photography,
basic image editing and techniques for portraiture, landscape, fashion and documentary genres.
Activities: We start each day covering digital
camera functions and shooting techniques,
illustrating with examples of work from different areas of photographic practice. Students
break into teams to work, ensuring experience
and efficiency.
Faculty: Mariana Vieira received her MFA from
the University of Colorado at Boulder where
she was awarded the Graduate Instructor
Teaching Award. Her work has appeared in
national and international exhibitions. A former Anderson Ranch resident, Mariana enjoys
working with photo-based processes while
integrating kinetic devices and stop-motion
to animate constructed stills. She is originally
from Brazil.

Concept: Can you imaging carving a piece of
wood that’s spinning so fast it’s just a blur? Is
there anything more fun than being covered
with wood shavings and drenched by flying
droplets released by revolving green wood?
These events are part of the fun of woodturning. In this workshop, everyone makes several
projects on the lathe, including bowls, candlesticks and even bowling pins.
Media & Techniques: Kiln-dried and green
wood, milk paint, dyes and other finishes; fundamentals of bowl and spindle carving on the
lathe, safe use of power tools and hand tools,
basic tool and wood selection, sharpening, finishing techniques and adding texture.
Activities: Technical demonstrations and turning
projects are designed to build skills and confidence on the lathe. Students have lots of individual time on the lathe and one-on-one instruction.
Faculty: Brad Reed Nelson has an MFA in
Sculpture from Arizona State University. He
founded Board by Design, a functional design
company that has been in the Roaring Fork Valley, Colorado for nine years. Brad was included
in an Architectural Digest Home Design Show.
