Fire up your imagination and get ready to create characters and imagery in mixedand digital media. This workshop teaches the basics of animation: capturing images and manipulating them on the computer. We bring your characters to life as we work with mixed media and digital media to produce both visionary and cutting edge work. Sharks and whales and seahorses, oh my! How many kinds of sharks are there? Do fish really sleep with their eyes open? Let’s dive deep to discover the underwater sea world. We create ocean creatures based on the real deal, like a giant, stuffed blue whale made from recycled paper, and a dainty, delicate seahorse complete with sand and shells from the ocean. We also come up with our own creations, such as mermaids and Loch Ness monsters. By week’s end, our art studio will be transformed into a beautiful underwater land. Create stories through video, bringing ideas to life with digital video cameras, digital editing and your own creativity! Working together, we make an adventure movie starring students as actors and directors. Bring your ideas, a knack for adventure and a willingness to learn about the art of video production, storytelling and putting your ideas on the big screen. 3D Animation The Deep Blue Tom Alpern graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design and now lives in Aspen. He is a videographer, editor, snow sculptor, writer, artist and teacher. Sonya Taylor is the Children’s and Outreach Coordinator at Anderson Ranch. She is the founder of Yellow Canary, a children’s arts and crafts studio in based in Basalt, Colorado. Adventures in Filmmaking Digital video cameras (bring your own if you have one), video editing software (iMovie) and Apple computers are provided. Camera techniques include transitions, continuity, and composition. The class explores techniques in storytelling, role playing, and directing as well. This workshop introduces kids to a world of video making. The days start with a “production schedule” consisting of set-ups, rehearsals, shoots, retakes and dailies. After filming is complete, teams assemble the movies through video editing. The completed film production will be available at the end of the workshop. Joel Lee is a local videographer and editor. He is a graduate of Colorado State University’s award-winning television broadcasting program. After working in the advertising world creating commercials, Joel transitioned into making television programming and producing live events. You can find Joel working on his projects at Aspen Video Productions. Computers are provided by YouthEntity, a community and youth empowerment initiative.
