Wooden Books: back to back

Skill Level: Open to all
Skill Level: Open to all
Concept: Students explore the symbolic
power of materials as they spend the week
building and embellishing forms. We shape
and carve polystyrene into sculptural forms
wrapped in resin-coated fabric. This process
allows the artist to work on a larger scale without the weight concerns of traditional sculptural materials. The workshop combines working time in the studio, discussions concerning
materials and artists, and gathering materials
to embellish forms.
Concept: The first back-to-back books were
created 500 years ago to save material, and
this historic work provides an ideal example
from which to learn, practice and master a variety of techniques. In this workshop, students
construct an historically inspired wooden book
structure, exploring Ethiopian, Greek and Coptic sewing variations. The emphasis of the
workshop is the use of wooden covers. Students also explore techniques to create windows, inlays and enclosures within wood covers to house and protect found objects.
Media & Techniques: Cutting and forming of
polystyrene foam; gluing, layering and arranging found objects and other materials.
Activities: Demonstrations, studio work
time, slide presentations, discussions and
individual feedback.
Faculty: Jennifer Onofrio Fornes is a Professor of Studio Art at Augusta State University.
She received her BFA in painting and sculpture
from the University of Wisconsin in 1989 and
her MFA in sculpture, drawing, and photography from the University of California, Davis,
in 1991. Jennifer’s work has been exhibited
nationally and her work is housed in numerous
private and public collections.

Media & Techniques: Wood and paper; drilling,
sewing attachments, shaping boards, creating
texture, painting and sealing; hand and power
tools; two-needle Coptic stitches that lace into
wooden covers; techniques to create windows
and enclosures within covers.
Activities: Each day is a balance of demonstrations and work time with slide presentations and group discussions. Daniel supplies
additional projects to those who wish to work
evenings or early mornings.
Faculty: Daniel Essig studied at Southern Illinois University, Penland School and the University of Iowa. He is a recipient of the North
Carolina Artist Fellowship grant. Daniel exhibits
his work nationally and is in numerous private
and public collections. Recently, his work has
been collected by the Smithsonian’s Renwick
Museum, the University of Iowa Libraries and
the Topeka Library.

Creating Volumetric Forms
from Flat Material
Jonathan Kirk
Skill Level: I - IV
Concept: Working with flat, rigid sheet material to “skin” volumetric forms is quite a challenge. Jonathan has developed techniques to
address the problem by substituting cardboard
for steel or wood. Using double wall corrugated
cardboard and hot glue as our basic building
materials, students make models. Incorporating either basic geometric principles or using
free-form organic abstraction (and everything
in between), the three-dimensional possibilities
are endless. Students are invited to think about
shapes and forms that hold particular interest
and bring those ideas to the workshop. Jonathan helps transform images from the mind’s
eye into tangible sculptural forms.
