Studio Critique:
Skill Level: Open to all
Concept: Arthur introduces students to contemporary and modern artists whose sculptural works exemplify the language of threedimensional form. He demonstrates materials
and techniques used to assemble and construct objects that lay the groundwork for
creating sculptures. Students explore ways
to convey meaning based on how objects are
used and repurposed.
Media & Techniques: Forms created with a
variety of materials, mixed-media and found
objects such as old tools, furniture, toys that
are wrapped, bound and assembled with wire
and string.
Activities: Faculty and student discussions,
demonstrations and in-class work to design
and build sculptures.
Faculty: Arthur Simms was born in Saint
Andrew Parish, Jamaica, West Indies. He emigrated to Brooklyn, New York. He received his
MFA and BFA from Brooklyn College. Arthur
has been the recipient of numerous awards,
including the Rome Prize Fellowship, Academy
Award for Art from the American Academy
of Arts and Letters, Creative Capital Grant,
Guggenheim Fellowship, Louis Comfort Tiffany
Foundation Award, Residency Award from the
Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin, New
York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Residency Fellowship, Joan Mitchell Foundation grant and Pollock-Krasner grant.

Skill Level: III & IV
Concept: Work at your own pace in the studio
on original work, pausing daily for a 45-minute
to one-hour discussion and critique. Topics are
in-depth and wide-ranging, including technique,
concept and approach. Although primarily a
sculpture class, we encourage participation by
sculptors, painters, photographers, media artists
and others. Artists are expected to find an object
(anything) that can be the focal or starting point
of a sculpture, using found materials and incorporating self-generated forms into the piece.
Intuition and experimentation are encouraged.
Artists finish their work on the last day of the
workshop when there is a final group critique.
Media & Techniques: Found materials and
self-generated forms. Artists participating in
this workshop are expected to be comfortable
with tool use and be self-motivated.
Activities: Students work in the studio on original work. Faculty and student talks take place
each day for 45 minutes to an hour, but students
are expected to work the entire class time.
Faculty: Huma Bhabha was born in Karachi,
Pakistan. She received her MFA from Columbia University. Her work appeared in The
2010 Whitney Biennial, curated by Francesco
Bonami and Gary Carrion-Murayari. She has
exhibited widely in North America and Europe.
Her work can be found in the collections of the
Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of
American Art and the Saatchi Collection.
