your ideas in steel
Installation: fast, cheap
and out of control
Mark Cesark

Skill Level: I - III
Skill Level: Open to all
Concept: This workshop explores constructing and fabricating hollow forms in steel for
on and off the wall. From concept to design,
and fabricating to finishing, students explore
their ideas using steel as the primary medium.
Students gain a clear working knowledge of
steel as a medium. Students should arrive
with concepts and ideas and track their projects through their sketchbooks.
Concept: Create out-of-control installation
art on a large scale from found, recycled or
reusable material. Participants work quickly
and rigorously to conceive, create and build
installations. Our aim throughout is to create
unique worlds of poignant, convincing and
perplexing reality.
Media & Techniques: Steel; arc welding, grinding, bending, forging, cutting, sanding, hollow
form construction, fabricating and surface
treatments such as patinas and paint; discussions of safety, tracking ideas with a sketchbook, incorporating found objects and recycled
metal, and formal concepts of sculpture.
Activities: Daily one-on-one consultations
are tailored to the needs of the individual
student along with studio time, class discussions and slides.
Cast Concrete Objects
Skill Level: Open to all
Concept: Cast concrete sculpture does not
have to be heavy! This workshop explores
creative hollow and lightweight concrete recipes. Students make lightweight sculptures
generated from quick sketches, working to
develop three-dimensional welded skeletons
of metal that can be enveloped in thin sheets
of cement.
Media & Techniques: MIG welding, steel rod,
cement, steel wool, fibers, sand and other
aggregate additives with fabricated steel
armatures and simple clay molds built for casting concrete.
Activities: Demonstrations twice daily followed
by work time and individual student assistance.
