Skill Level: IV, with portfolio review required.
Concept: Work at your own pace in the studio,
pausing daily for a 45-minute to one-hour discussion and critique. Topics are in-depth and
wide-ranging, including technique, concept
and approach. Although primarily a painting
class, participation by sculptors, photographers, media artists and others is encouraged.
Media & Techniques: Students choose their
media and techniques.
Activities: Students work in the studio on
original work. Faculty visits take place each day
for 45 minutes to one hour, but students are
expected to work the entire class time.

University at Fullerton. He received the Joan
Mitchell grant in 1998 and the Art Commission

Elizabeth Ferrill
Skill Level: II
Skill Level: Open to all
Concept: This workshop focuses on the
sketchbook as the bedrock for the artist’s
practice. We examine the power of drawing
to record and refine personal narrative into an
authentic and unique voice. Gary reviews a
variety of media, both wet and dry, and brings
to the class a wide array of tools and utensils
that have helped him succeed over his long
career as an artist, underground cartoonist
and visionary.
Media & Techniques: A variety of drawing
materials, from ink to graphite to charcoal,
both in and out of sketchbooks.
Activities: We draw for the majority of each
day, with individual feedback and technique
demonstrations given by the instructor.
Faculty: Gary Panter studied painting at East
Texas State University. In 2006-2007, his
work was in the exhibition, Masters of American Comics. He has exhibited at Dunn and
Brown, Dallas and Clementine Gallery, New
York, as well as the Aldrich Contemporary Art
Museum. His books include a comprehensive
monograph, Gary Panter (PictureBox), and
four graphic novels: Jimbo in Purgatory (Fantagraphics); Jimbo’s Inferno (Fantagraphics);
Cola Madnes (Funny Garbage); Jimbo: Adventures in Paradise (Pantheon). Gary has won
three Emmy Awards for his production design
on Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, as well as the 2000
Chrysler Award for Design Excellence.

Concept: The pochoir technique is a basic,
yet elegant, method of using a cut stencil and
hand-painted gouache to create a reproducible
image. In this workshop, students discover
ways in which this beautiful technique can be
used to create pattern or to hand-color drawings and prints. We also use the stencil process to make screen prints as a way to work in
larger formats.
Media & Techniques: Pochoir using gouache
and water-based screen printing.
Activities: Daily activities include hands-on demonstrations, individual instruction and discussion.
Faculty: A native of Seattle, Washington,
Elizabeth Ferrill received her BFA in Painting and Printmaking from Cornish College of
the Arts in Seattle. She received her MFA in
Printmaking from the Rhode Island School of
Design in Providence. Elizabeth is the Studio
Coordinator for Painting and Printmaking at
Anderson Ranch.
