Installation: narrative space
Marie Watt
Paul Mullowney
Skill Level: II
Concept: Students develop and create on-site
installations in this time-intensive exploration. As we build, we consider narratives that
accompany materials, technique, formal cues
and space. Students are encouraged to bring
concepts they want to mine through the realization of the installation.
Media & Techniques: Materials relating to
each student’s ideas or materials identified onlocation, including the local dump; open technical approaches, including prop, pin, sew, lace,
burn, illuminate, draw, papier-mâché, spray
paint, twine, whittle and build.
Activities: Marie engages group discussions
about technical problem solving, collaborative
practice and professional skills, all supported
by visual lectures. Students have large blocks
of time to work rigorously. Marie leads peer critiques and gives individual instruction.
Faculty: Marie Watt is a multidisciplinary artist who lives and works in Brooklyn, New
York and Portland, Oregon. Her work draws
from indigenous design principles, oral tradition, personal experience and historical record.
Selected collections include: the Fabric Workshop + Museum, the Seattle Art Museum,
and the Smithsonian National Museum of the
American Indian. Marie has received awards
from the Joan Mitchell Foundation, Anonymous Was a Woman, and the Native Arts
and Cultures Foundation. She attended the
Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture
and earned her MFA from Yale.

New Approaches to
Monumental Woodcut Prints
970/923-3181
Skill Level: III
Concept: The large woodcut print has long
challenged and fascinated artists and printmakers, from Albrecht Durer’s 16th-century masterpiece, The Triumphal Arch, to the contemporary relief prints of Sandow Birk, Cannonball
Press and Swoon. This workshop explores
the many techniques of large-scale woodcut
prints, using both traditional and contemporary approaches and materials. The goal of this
course is to further push the boundaries of this
exquisite and ancient print medium by investigating multiple layers of process.
Media & Techniques: Carving with hand tools
and power tools; hand printing with Japanese
papers and oil- and water-based ink; other
forms of hand coloring, with application of
additional pigments, collage and chine collé.
Activities: Students begin with an overview
of the history and technique of woodcut printing. We concentrate on developing images and
getting them on blocks with four to six days
dedicated to intensive carving and preliminary proofing. The second week focuses on
approaches to printing and assembling images
as we explore collage, layering, hand painting,
drying and displaying prints.
Faculty: Trained as an intaglio master printer at
Crown Point Press, Paul Mullowney was director of printmaking at Hui No`eau, Maui, where
he started the artist-in-residence and publishing program, HuiPress.

Painting & Everyday Life
Ross Bleckner
Skill Level: IV, with portfolio review required.
Concept: Each day participating artists work
individually and discuss the relationship
between Art, the Self and the World. Participants receive feedback through one-on-one
instruction and group discussion. This is an
incredible opportunity for advanced painters to work with one of America’s most celebrated painters.
Media & Techniques: Participants are free to
choose their own medium and should come
prepared to work.
Activities: Participants engage in self-guided
work and discussion.
Faculty: Ross Bleckner received a BFA from
New York University and an MFA from California Institute of the Arts. The Guggenheim
Museum had a retrospective of his works
summarizing shows at the San Francisco
Museum of Modern Art, Contemporary
Arts Museum, Stockholm Moderna Museet
and the Carnegie Museum of Art. Bleckner’s works are also in the collections of the
Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of
Contemporary Art, Astrup Fearnley, and the
Whitney Museum of American Art. He was
