In this workshop we focus equally on landscape imagery and etching techniques, inspired by the mountain beauty surrounding Anderson Ranch. We draw directly onto copper plates with drypoint, hardground, softground and soapground. We focus on proper plate preparation, site selection, drawing, etching and printing, supported by discussion and critique. Media & Techniques:  Line and tonal drawing techniques (drypoint, hardground, softground and soapground) on copper; plate preparation, processing and printing techniques. Activities: Daily activities include group presentations with instruction on use of ferric chloride etchant, proper paper and ink preparation, press setup, blanket care and print drying. Studio work is supported by group discussion and critique. Faculty:  Brian Shure is a painter and printmaker who is represented by Katharina Rich Perlow Gallery in New York and Lenore Gray Gallery in Providence, Rhode Island. He was a Master Printer at Crown Point Press from 1987 to 1994. He has taught at Brown and Cornell Universities, and teaches in the Printmaking Department at the Rhode Island School of Design. The focus is on color, form and scale, incorporating materials such as mica flakes, crushed shells, sawdust and sand. Students break away from traditional aspects of the genre to create a dynamic, sculptural still-life painting. We explore black-on-black painting, still life composed of shadows, using mirrors, a “hanging” still life, forms as a cut-out paper construction and “collaborative” drawing. Media & Techniques:  Acrylic paint on canvas with other media welcome; paint, watercolor, collage or drawing; natural materials such as twigs, leaves, dirt, cardboard, rocks, mica flakes and shell flakes; several acrylic mediums, from paste to tar gel. Activities:  We take long or short walks and hikes. We may paint outside some days, depending on class momentum. We work on our own objects or with a collaborative group installation throughout the week. Part of the last day is a group critique and discussion. Faculty: Sarah Bedford recieved her BFA from Cooper Union and attended the Skowhegan residency program. A recipient of the National Academy of Design painting award as well as the Lower East Side Printshop artist fellowship, she has shown regularly with Bellwether Gallery and at Sloan Fine Art.   www.sarahbedford.com Tuition: $920 / Studio Support Cost: $1120 Studio Fee: $75 Code: D0610 Enrollment Limit 10 Mixed-Media Collage Portraits Lucy Fradkin Skill Level: II Concept:  In this workshop, students create mixed-media collage works on paper, drawing inspiration from detailed compositions, resplendent colors and the narrative quality of the art of early civilizations. Art techniques focus on line, composition, color, pattern and the use of collage as a design element. Students learn archival collage techniques while expressing personal stories with symbolic meaning. Media & Techniques:  Drawing, painting and collage in diverse media. Activities:  The workshop begins with a presentation of the mosaics and frescos of the Etruscans, Byzantines and Romans. Students work independently on projects supported by daily discussions and critiques that are integral to the experience.
