Skill Level: III
Skill Level: Open to all
Concept: Crack the nut of abstraction while
infusing your art with the vigor of visual experience. We use natural objects, landscape, historical, 20th-century and contemporary art to
glean strategies for the studio. Choose from a
menu of classic and innovative projects that create abstractions and semi-abstract landscapes
in varied media. Share experiments with color,
form, composition and surface from fresh
sources as we formulate research tools, gain
hands-on skills and investigate new terrain.
Concept: Create out-of-control installation
art on a large scale from found, recycled or
reusable material. Participants work quickly
and rigorously to conceive, create and build
installations. Our aim throughout is to create
unique worlds of poignant, convincing and
perplexing reality.
Skill Level: I & II
Concept: The term “monotype” is defined as a
“printed drawing or printed painting” that is not
a multiple but a unique image printed from a flat
surface. Contemporary monotype recognizes
no rules or boundaries as artists push the limits
of the medium. Students are shown different
ways to make monotypes, exploring methods
during and outside class hours. We also make
one-of-a-kind monoprints that include a surface
scratch or mark that is repeated, yet altered
with unique painterly textures.
Media & Techniques: Inks, presses and painterly techniques; roll-up techniques; photocopy
transfers and preparatory drawing techniques;
Mylar stencils.
Activities: We begin each class with demonstrations of techniques, followed by hands-on
studio time producing work and providing individual assistance. The last half of the last day is
dedicated to critique and feedback.
Faculty: Enrique Chagoya was born in Mexico
City. His father, a bank employee by day and
artist by night, taught him how to draw. Enrique
attended the Universidad Nacional Autónoma
de México, where he contributed political cartoons to student and union newsletters. He
earned his MA and MFA at the University of
California, Berkeley. His work has been shown
nationally and internationally and his work can
be found in many public collections. He is a
Professor at Stanford University.
