Skill Level: II Concept:  This workshop focuses on waterbased photo screen printing techniques used to make political and rock posters. Slide lectures discuss the history of posters, especially from the 1960s, a vivid time of political thought and action as reflected in the music of the era. Technical demonstrations cover beginning photo screen printing processes as students learn to apply a photo stencil to screens and print one- and two-color registered prints. Concept: This workshop is for advanced artists wanting critical feedback on their work from one of contemporary art’s most exciting painters. Students are asked to bring one work and documented images for discussion as well as materials needed to work in the studio. Each student receives considerable focused time with the teacher to tackle key elements of their work and vision. Concept:  Why do artists use devices like science fiction, surrealism and fantasy? How can we transcend the seemingly fixed limitations of our own minds? Where do passion and devotion come from? A great painting draws its power from a place beyond words. Like dreams, visual art can destabilize how we see “reality” by showing us that we are constantly creating labels to fix things in place that cannot be fixed. This class explores these ideas through the lens of (primarily) figurative painting. Screen Printed Posters Media & Techniques:  Acrylic screen printing ink with a variety of papers, photo emulsion, drawings and computer generated graphics as preparatory artwork. (Images brought to the workshop should be printed in black inkjet ink.) Activities: The first day begins with examples of posters from the last 50 years as well as a discussion of finished posters with preparatory artwork. The first technical demonstration covers emulsion
