WOODTURNING
The Woodturning program unites exciting workshops with extraordinary
faculty. Workshops range from traditional woodturning to innovative approaches in
contemporary art and design. If you want to advance your skills and expand your
creative imagination, then we have a workshop for you.
The Pryor Turning Studio is outfitted with nine workstations, each equipped with a
lathe and set of tools.
WOODTURNING SKILL LEVELS:

Open to all – Students of any skill and knowledge level.
Level I – Students are new to woodturning and have no formal training.

Level II – Students have a basic understanding of fundamental turning tools and techniques
and are comfortable using and sharpening bowl gouges and spindle gouges.

Level III – Students have significant turning experience using both green and kiln-dried
lumber. Students are capable of selecting wood, able to use and sharpen gouges,
and familiar with basic principles of 3D design. Students have some formal technical
training in woodturning and have a portfolio of their artwork.
Level IV – Students have advanced skill and knowledge of woodturning. Students are
highly motivated, and have a minimum of five years experience in the field, and multiple
portfolios of their artwork. Typical students are academics and professional artists.

Carving for Woodturners:

Skill Level: III - IV
Concept: This workshop is for advanced woodturners seeking to move beyond the turned
form by adding decorative elements: carving,
coloring and other materials. Students use
a variety of hand and power tools along with
dyes, bleach, pyrography and paint.
Media & Techniques: Green wood, paints,
dyes, bleach and various finishes. Woodturning, carving, pyrography, various finishing applications and adding texture.
Activities: Daily demonstrations are followed
by plenty of hands-on time with assignments
designed to encourage exploration. Hollow
turning demonstrations emphasize smooth
and efficient tool use.
Faculty: John Jordan has been a woodturner
for nearly 25 years. He has demonstrated and
given hands-on lessons to thousands of woodturners, both nationally and internationally. His
work is featured in numerous private and corporate collections. His work is also in the permanent collections of more than 25 museums,
including seven pieces in the Renwick Gallery
of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Dan Bailey is a woodturner from Fort Collins, Colorado. His work was chosen as outstanding at
the Rocky Mountain Woodturning Symposium.
He is represented by several galleries and has
taught woodturning workshops at the Anderson
Ranch Arts Center for multiple summers.
