With that ideal as a focus, we trust our intuition to help direct our engineering decisions. To investigate structural choices, each student tackles a challenging table design using a light structure with the rigidity and strength to support a human. Our goal is to have the skill, confidence and enthusiasm to build a piece from fully-developed drawings. Concept: This workshop introduces beginning level students to solid wood materials, the use of hand tools, safe operation of woodworking machinery and the expressive, artistic potential of functional furniture projects. Our focus will be to create a simple bench with lots of room for individual interpretation and personalization. Concept:  This two-week intensive workshop explores the design and construction of fine, handmade chairs. Our focus is on comfort, aesthetics and strength. Through discussions, demonstrations and hands-on work, each student designs and constructs their own chair. Sketching and mock-ups are used to demystify the design process. Craig discusses wood grain selection for balanced design and instructs on fundamental skills, such as sharpening, the sensitive use of hand tools and organizing the work. Media & TechniqueS:  Wood, traditional and experimental woodworking techniques, and strip-laminated parts. Activities:  Students work quickly through rough sketches and models, progressing to full-size mock-ups and working drawings. Appropriate joinery or other kinds of connections are discussed according to the specifics of each project. Faculty:  Michael Hurwitz earned a BFA from Boston University’s Program in Artisanry and was formerly the Head of the Wood Department at University of the Arts, Philadelphia. He has shown extensively, including several solo exhibitions at the Peter Joseph Gallery and Pritam and Eames Gallery in New York. His work is represented in the public collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC. Michael is the recipient of many honors, including three National Endowment for the Arts Visual Artist Fellowships, Japan Foundation Fellowship and Pew Fellowship in the Arts.   www.michaelhurwitzfurniture.com Tuition: $975 / Studio Support Cost: $1375 Studio Fee: $145 Code: W1015 Enrollment Limit 12 32  www.anderso nranch .or g 970/923-3181 Media & Techniques:  Wood, mi
