Keep Practicing: pottery making
CONCEPT: Working with the vessel format, creative breakthroughs often come from mistakes,
failures or are simply latent. This workshop
focuses on engineering “mistakes” using plaster and porcelain. Experiments include testing the limits of the materials by using them
both “right” and “wrong.” Forming methods,
experiments and variations from the norm rely
on as many solutions as students can invent.
Come to the workshop with a clear but simple
goal and be ready to take risks.
CONCEPT: This workshop seeks to inspire, demonstrate and explain a variety of wheel throwing
techniques, with the underlying concept that we
all must practice. Only by repetition do potters
hone their skills, develop fluency and consistency in their work. Students work on cylinders,
bowls, pulling handles and altering forms.
Media & Techniques: Turning plaster forms on
a wheel, sledding wet plaster through a template, frosting, and methods invented during
the workshop; porcelain clay that is slip cast,
press molded and fired to cone 5.
Activities: Demonstrations are twice daily.
Activities include wedging, throwing a cylinder and taller shapes, throwing bowl and flat
shapes, pulling handles and applying them,
looking at tools and how to make them, trimming, paddling, manipulation, deforming, applying slip, sgrafitto, hakeme, fluting, carving and
impressing along with wax and shellac resists.
Glazing techniques include pouring, immersing
and rolling. We also decorate with brushes,
washes, flicking and window dipping.
Activities: Demonstrations twice daily include
plaster mixing, slip casting, marbleizing, press
molding and glazing. Each morning, we discuss
work from the previous day. A group discussion and review concludes the workshop.
Faculty: Andrew Martin earned his BFA from
the Kansas City Art Institute and his MFA
from Alfred University. He is the author of The
Essential Guide to Mold Making and Slip Casting, which has become the standard text on
the subject. Andrew’s work is represented by
Harvey/Meadows Gallery, Ferrin Gallery and
Turman-Larison Contemporary.

Faculty: Simon apprenticed with his father,
the late David Leach, at the Lowerdown Pottery, Bovey Tracey, Devon, England in 1979.
He remained there until 1984, when he went
out on his own and started his first studio in
Exeter, Devon, England. 1990 brought more
changes and he moved south to Spain where
he has had a pottery studio and showroom. In
2009, he began teaching workshops here in
the United States and divides his time between
central Pennsylvania and Spain.
