Artists & Gardens
Carl Reed & Gus Reed
Skill Level: II - IV
Concept: Here is an ideal session for the artist who
gardens. Or perhaps a gardener with a keen artistic sense. Or even a maker, collector or admirer
of outdoor art. Either way, this workshop offers a
marvelous opportunity to investigate the relationship between landscape design and fine art. Participants study images of historic and contemporary landscape art, gardens and outdoor art from
around the world. One emphasis is on recognizing the importance of any site’s specific conditions
and culture to a successful garden or landscaping
design. We consider different climates, soil conditions, water use, changing seasons and more.
Media & Techniques: Simple scale model building. Materials: chip board, mat board, modeling
clay, small plants, stones, etc. and journals.
Activities: Morning and afternoon visual presentations ignite discussion and illustrate
design issues. There are regular group meetings to discuss projects and the teachers provide extensive individual advice.
Faculty: Carl and Gus Reed are a father/son collaborative design team. Carl Reed is a Coloradobased sculptor with an MFA from Pratt Institute.
He has extensive experience with large-scale,
site-specific public art commissions. He has
taught sculpture and three-dimensional design
at Colorado College for 35 years.
