SCULPTURE
The Sculpture program is excited to host a vibrant spectrum of workshops that
reflect the variety in current studio practice. Sculpture workshops are material- and
technique-rich, ranging from traditional metal fabrication to experimental electronic work.
Our renowned sculpture faculty travels to us from around the world. They work closely with
students through critical discussion, material demonstrations and individual assistance.
Instructors encourage exploration and experimentation, emphasizing process and idea
development. You will leave with far more than just finished pieces: you take with you the
tools and inspiration to elevate your studio practice to the next level.
John Lloyd, Covered Jar
Students work in a communal and interactive studio designed for all levels of experience
and supporting traditional and non-traditional methods. The sculpture studio includes a
bench room and machine/tool room and offers additional outside workspace.

Making Connections:
John Lloyd
Skill Level: Open to all
Concept: Put it all together in this workshop
that recognizes a fundamental fact: the way
that sculptures are assembled is as powerful
as the images they conjure. The ultimate goal
here is to make solid art. Whether a piece is
sloppy or slick, it still needs to be put together.
This workshop focuses on the aesthetics of
connections and covers a wide variety of fastening techniques ranging from the quick and
dirty to tapping and cutting machine threads.
This session is both an introduction to and a
refresher of solid studio practices.
Media & Techniques: Various metals and
woods, as well as found materials and objects.
Basic fasteners, pneumatic nail and staple
guns, rivets, wire and cable swages. Demonstrations of welding, tapping for machine
screws, basic wood construction, riveting and
ways to use a wide variety of adhesives.
Activities: Between large blocks of creative
work time, John gives structured demonstrations and exercises for improvised problem
solving as it relates to individual requests and
group discussions.
Faculty: John Lloyd received his MFA in sculpture from Alfred University. He poured iron with
Kohler’s Arts & Industry program, and has built
custom cabinets, furniture and homes around
the US and Europe. Prior to becoming Sculpture Studio Coordinator, John had worked at
the Ranch for eight summers including three
years as artist-in-residence.
