Screen Printed Posters
Alan Lerner
Skill Level: Open to all
Concept: Almost since its invention, screen
printing has been the medium of choice for
political and rock posters. This workshop
focuses on water-based photo screen printing
techniques, giving students the tools to make
their own artistic statements. Slide lectures
discuss the history of posters, especially from
the 1960’s, a vivid time of political thought and
action as reflected in the music of the era.
Technical demonstrations cover beginning
photo screen printing processes and one- and
two-color registration.
Media & Techniques: Acrylic screen printing ink
with a variety of papers, photo emulsion, drawings and computer-generated graphics as preparatory artwork. Students may bring images
to print; these should be in black inkjet ink.
Activities: The first day begins with examples
of posters from the last 50 years as well as a
discussion of finished posters with preparatory
artwork. The first technical demonstration covers emulsion application, photo process, and
wash out. The week proceeds with lots of studio time. Each day begins with a demonstration
and discussion of the previous day’s work.

Collagraph Printmaking: the
sculptural matrix
Orit Hofshi
Charles Cohan
Skill Level: IV, portfolio review required
Skill Level: II - IV
Concept: This advanced printmaking workshop
creates a constructive environment to pursue
ongoing work in various printmaking techniques. Students arrive with a project, either
planned or already underway. We “workshop”
these projects in one-on-one and group critiques, allowing artists to respond immediately
in their studio work. This is a focused week
to strengthen existing technical skills, refine
conceptual approaches, broaden knowledge
of contemporary printmaking and discuss content, message and artistic research.
Concept: A collagraph is like a topographic map
– it shows the many layers that have been built
up and eroded over time. Participants in this
workshop take a sculptural approach, emphasizing both constructive and erosive actions on
the surface of the plate. The advantages of the
collagraph process include the use of inexpensive and readily available substrates, the ability
to make prints at a larger than usual scale, the
practice of alternative mark-making techniques
and tools, and the use of recycled and scrap
materials. Experiment with these techniques in
this workshop that explores the many dimensions of collagraph printmaking.
Media & Techniques: Relief printmaking,
monotypes and mixed media including computer-enhanced processes.
Activities: Students develop ongoing projects through guided studio time, one-on-one
and group critiques, and slide presentations.
Technical demonstrations respond to student
needs, with topics including relief plate-work,
printing, monotype techniques and mixedmedia tactics. Orit meets individually with students on a daily basis.
Media & Techniques: The use of non-traditional
tools for the inscription of marks upon various
matrices including carving, hammering, grinding, stamping, sanding, bur
