Skill Level: II - IV
Concept: This workshop gives students an
opportunity to learn the age-old technique of
engraving, but with a twist: modern materials.
High-impact polystyrene has become an economical plastic stand-in for the copper, zinc or
end-grain wood used in old-style engraving.
Students learn carving techniques, including
use of gray-scale, pattern, silhouettes, stippling
and other monochrome effects. Each participant carves and prints an edition, and has the
chance to experiment with inking techniques
such as creating a “green” aquatint effect
using carborundum and gel medium, shaping
a plate and printing on alternative papers with
collage methods.
Concept: In the strictest sense, the term
“monotype” is defined as a “printed drawing or printed painting” – a work that is not a
multiple, but a unique image printed from a flat
surface. Contemporary monotype recognizes
no such rules or boundaries. Push the limits
of the medium in this workshop that offers a
plethora of different ways to make monotypes.
Students explore a wide range of approaches
both during and outside class hours. Enrique
also demonstrates how to make one-of-a-kind
monoprints that include a surface scratch or
mark that is repeated, yet altered with unique
painterly textures.
