Skill Level: III
Concept: Using the natural environment surrounding the Ranch as well as art and research
resources, this class focuses on ways to record
and develop new imagery. Sketchbooks, collage and works on paper are all fodder for
exploration, turning personal interests into
fresh visual language. Techniques for making
powerful small works while traveling are introduced, while strategies like the album, scroll
and tight series will add a “time” element and
conceptual complexity to our projects. Through
one-on-one guidance and group critiques, this
hands-on think tank provides inspiration and
notebooks full of ideas.
Concept: How does an artist build or release
metaphorical, physical and psychological tension? Through material choice, relationships,
context and activity, to name a few. We
explore using everyday fiber materials such as
string, wire, tape, paper, cloth and elastic along
with other found and favored hard and soft
materials. Students work between drawing
and sculpture, discovering how materials used
in relationship can achieve meaningful degrees
of tension and release.
The Structured Accident
Allison Miller
Skill Level: III
Concept: Here is a chance to open up to possibilities, push to experiment and expand each
students practice. Risk-taking and chance drive
this painting workshop as we work quickly and
intuitively within a rigorous conceptual structure. Students make multiple paintings each
day starting from loose formal or structural
parameters. From there, the direction is up to
each student. We engage in serious group and
individual critiques to address the formal and
conceptual concerns that emerge from this
spontaneous way of working.
Media & Techniques: Student’s preferred paint
medium (oil or acrylic on canvas).
Activities: Students paint every day and hold
a number of critiques to discuss their work.
Painting continues outside of class.
Faculty: Allison Miller received her MFA from
UCLA. She is represented by ACME Los
Angeles and has an upcoming solo exhibition at Susan Inglett, New York. She has been
included in group exhibitions at the Orange
County Museum of Art, Gagosian Gallery,
Los Angeles, D’Amelio Terras, New York, The
Las Vegas Museum of Art, and the Art Gallery of Calgary. She was included in Painting
Abstraction: New Elements in Abstract Painting, by Bob Nickas. She has taught at UCLA,
UC-Irvine, UC-Riverside, Anderson Ranch Arts
Center and Claremont Graduate University.
