Mountains and trees as well as street signs and man-made objects in the landscape can resonate with us and tell stories. In this class, students work from observation in the landscape to glean inspiration from nature as a jumping off point for their studio practices. Narrative within the landscape is approached as a vehicle for translating our observations into an image that has a poignant sense of place, story, time and world. Concept: In the process of making art we mirror our concerns with the material of the external world, drawing it inward and producing work. In the same way that the artifacts of a museum determine its identity, the work that we make as artists makes a statement about our personal interpretation and experience of the world. Students work independently on personal projects in the studio while participating daily in discourse aiming to open awareness about what artists are drawn to, what we absorb, and how it is internalized and used as a vehicle to produce work. Participation by painters, sculptors, photographers, media artists and others is welcome and encouraged. Observing the Cultural Landscape Chuck Forsman Skill Level:  II Concept: This painting workshop facilitates the interaction of internal and external discovery through the observation of the cultural landscape. Delving into the fundamentals of painting and observation becomes the vehicle by which students transform their preconceived assumptions about the world. Regarding the landscape we inhabit through a critical and imaginative lens is a major step towards developing a distinctive visual language. Media & Techniques: Sketchbook drawing, oil and/or acrylic painting, brush and easel use, non-toxic solvent use. A
