Woodturning Master Class
Skill Level: IV
Concept: Make strong skills even stronger
with guidance from an internationally recognized master of bowl and vessel making. Use
advanced tool methods and turning techniques
to experience the uniquely dynamic, body-mind
process of woodturning. Concentrated studio
time combines with lively discussions of craft
and design issues to inspire a deeper understanding of this distinctive creative process.
Media & Techniques: Green wood; turning
open and closed forms, practice with the Ellsworth signature gouge and a variety of hollowing tools.
Activities: Students explore exercises in body
movement, flexion and muscle access; guided
visualizations; and using the mind’s eye as a
resource for design development. The week
includes concentrated work in the turning
studio, slide presentations and discussions
of photography, marketing, design influences,
aesthetics and philosophy.
Faculty: David Ellsworth has been a studio
woodturner and vessel maker for 30 years.

David Ellsworth
Skill Level: I & II
Concept: “Turning wood is a centering process,” says David Ellsworth. “It can develop
focus and foster growth while reawakening
self-expression.” Explore the process of centering while working on the lathe. This workshop emphasizes low-tech turning with a wide
range of woodturning techniques. In daily studio practice and discussions both formal and
informal, we consider key concepts of good
design in making bowls and vessels.
Media & Techniques: Green wood. Developing
designs; mounting and chucking materials; vacuum systems; sanding and finishing; correct body
positions; and tool designs and applications.
Activities: Each day is a balance of demonstrations, discussions, and concentrated work
in the woodturning studio with the Ellsworth
signature gouge. There are daily discussions of
ongoing work.
