Susan Working, Untitled Bonnie Klein, White Ash Stool Merryll Saylan, Gouged Platter July 16 - 20 July 23 - 27 July 30 - August 3 Punctuating Space: screens, panels and wall-hung sculpture Stools & Boxes with Threaded Lids Susan Working & Jason Schneider Bonnie Klein Skill Level: Open to all Skill Level: II - IV Concept:  This workshop explores how relatively simple wood constructions can radically activate space and make a powerful statement. Using the lathe and other woodworking tools to fabricate elements, we construct abstract compositions in the form of screens, panels and wall-hung sculptures. We experiment with color, texture, shape and surface, and employ a variety of compositional strategies as we investigate tools and techniques and gain hands-on skills. Concept:  A children’s four-legged heirloom stool may seem a simple construction, but it provides a design challenge as well as an opportunity to advance skills in spindle turning. In this workshop we design, draft, turn and construct a small stool. Participants also learn techniques for turning boxes with threaded lids by using a lathe threading jig. Bonnie also offers instruction in making nested boxes, working with inserts and adding ornamentation. Media & Techniques:  Wood, paint, dyes. Traditional and unconventional methods of woodturning, joinery, shaping, painting and fabrication. Activities:  Activities include technical demonstrations, presentations and discussion. We work on and off the lathe, with plenty of focused studio time. Faculty: Susan Working received her MFA from RISD. Currently Windgate Artist in Residence at San Diego State University, Susan was Academic Director of the Pont Aven School of Contemporary Art in France from 2009-2011, and Director of the Furniture Design and Sculpture Program at Anderson Ranch from 2002-2009.   www.susanworking.com   Jason Schneider received his MFA in Furniture Design from San Diego State University. He is currently the Woodworking Studio Coordinator at   Anderson Ranch. www.jasonschneiderfurniture.com Tuition: $775  OR  Tuition + Studio Support Donation: $975 Studio Fee: $95 Code: W0709 Enrollment Limit 8 36  Media & Techniques:  Kiln-dried wood. Face plate and spindle turning on the lathe, cutting theory, shaping techniques, tool usage, sharpening techniques, use of the threading jig, simple inlay techniques, chatterwork and other decorative finishes. Activities: Each morning and afternoon, demonstrations and turning time offer instruction and practice. By the end of the week, students are completing a stool and several boxes. Faculty:  Bonnie is a pioneer in the field of creating turned boxes with threaded lids. She also designed, produced and marketed the Klein lathe and threading jig. She has written a book and produced DVDs about woodturning. In 2003, the American Association of Woodturners recognized her with an Honorary Lifetime Membership.   www.bonnieklein.com Tuition: $775  OR  Tuition + Studio Support Donation: $975 Studio Fee: $95 Code: W0811 Enrollment Limit 8 an dersonra nch.o rg   970/923-3181  inf o@ande r s o n r a n c h . o r g Little Plates & Large Platters Merryll Saylan Skill Level: I - III Concept:  What could be a more elemental exploration of turning than the making of plates and platters? This course begins with small plates and simple mounting techniques, then moves on to laminating boards for large platters. We explore the issues of turning larger pieces: thickness and types of materials, wood grain and pattern for laminating, wood movement, and mounting options. We consider the design and form of the work, such as rims or no rims, scale and function. We discuss turning platters for exploring surfaces for color and texture. Media & Techniques:  Wood, laminating boards, turning tools. Mounting, laminating, turning, sanding. Activities:  Each day begins with demos and discussions of techniques. We use visual images for inspiration, design and planning. There is plenty of work time and one-on-one instruction. Faculty:  Merryll Saylan lives and maintains a studio in Berkeley, California. She has an MA in Art from California State UniversityNorthridge. Her work has been exhibited in many museums and galleries, including the Renwick Gallery, Museum of Art & Desig
