WOODTURNING
The Woodturning program unites exciting workshops with extraordinary faculty.
Workshops range from traditional woodturning to innovative approaches in contemporary
art and design. If you want to advance your skills and expand your creative imagination,
then we have a workshop for you.
The Pryor Turning Studio is outfitted with nine workstations, each equipped with a lathe
and set of tools.

and are comfortable using and sharpening bowl gouges and spindle gouges.
Level III – Students have significant turning experience using both green and kiln-dried
lumber. Students are capable of selecting wood, able to use and sharpen gouges, and

Segmented Turning: pushing
your skills to the next level
Curt Theobald
Skill Level: II - IV
Concept: Segmented woodturning, by definition, is gluing multiple pieces of wood together
to create interesting effects that highlight different colors and species of wood. In actual
practice, it’s a design adventure. Each participant in this workshop builds patterns, explores
design concepts, and constructs and turns a
segmented bowl. By the end of the week students not only improve their turning skills, but
have a better understanding of the properties
of wood, design and techniques necessary for
precise joinery.
Media & Techniques: Kiln-dried wood. Cutting,
sanding, clamping, gluing pieces together,
woodturning.
Activities: Demonstrations cover the safe cutting of small pieces, wood movement and precise joinery. Slide lectures offer a look at segmented woodturning as practiced by various
woodturners. Studio time is devoted to designing and laminating unique patterns for turning
and to successful completion of a project.
Faculty: Curt Theobald, an artist based in Pine
Bluffs, Wyoming, has been a full-time studio
woodturner since 2002. His segmented works
have been exhibited in numerous museum and
gallery events nationwide including the del Mano
Gallery, Collectors of Wood Art and SOFA Chicago and New York. He has demonstrated segmented turning both nationally and internationally
and has written articles on segmented turning
for the AAW and Woodturning magazine.
