Skill Level: II - IV
Concept: A lamp can be so much more than
a simple utilitarian device to shed light. The
interplay of light, shadow and sculpture – that’s
the focus of this hands-on workshop. As participants design and build working lamps, they
investigate the structural and sculptural possibilities of forms and materials from nature. The
result: a creation that is unique, organic and
inspirational – as well as functional.
Concept: Chairs are revered for their technical, ergonomic and expressive qualities. In this
workshop students learn various techniques
used to form, shape and join wood to make
comfortable seating that expresses their creative voice. We have individual and group discussions of designs through drawing, models,
and mock ups, culminating with the execution
of your own chair design.
Media & Techniques: Green wood collected
from the wild, hemp fibers, natural silk, washi
(Japanese “rice” paper) and kakishibu, a natural Japanese surface-strengthening tannin
made from fermented persimmons. Various
methods of illumination are provided.
Media & Techniques: Wood. Traditional and
non-traditional methods of joinery: mortise
and tenon, doweling, finger, lap and dovetail.
Shaping with hand and power carvers, chisels,
grinders and sanders. Bending with steam,
hot pipe, laminates and vacuum bag. Carving,
burning, texturing and coloration, paints, dyes,
stains and sealants.
Activities: The group takes trips to collect
green wood and other natural materials, then
returns to the studio to create and construct.
Clifton offers demonstrations of skills and
techniques, guides participants in their studio
work and shows slides to instruct and inspire.
Faculty: Clifton Monteith is a studio furniture
maker based in Michigan; he has been working with natural materials for more than two
decades. He received his BFA at Michigan
State University and received an NEA grant
and Japan Foundation Fellowship to work and
study in Japan. Clifton’s work has been exhibited by major museums nationally and internationally and is in many private collections.
