Skill Level: II - IV. Printmaking or photography
experience highly recommended.
Concept: When it comes to working in the
natural world, everyone has a unique perspective. Develop a distinctive personal style in this
workshop that explores how to see and compose images in the landscape. Discover photographic techniques that make the ordinary
extraordinary. We create images ranging from
close studies of wildflowers to majestic vistas,
and on the way, we seek each student’s own
vision of the landscape. We visit and study
the surrounding territory—back roads, smaller
towns—to get a handle on the lay of the land,
and to seek out places that still bear a sense of
an earlier authenticity.
Skill level: II - IV
Concept: Photogravure is considered by many
to be the most beautiful photographic process
in existence. Invented by Fox Talbot and used
by art photographers until the mid-1930’s, it
has had a renaissance among photographers,
artists and collectors for the past 30 years. This
workshop introduces students to the traditional
19th-century process of copperplate photogravure with adaptations to 21st-century tools and
materials. The week begins with a solid foundation in the steps of the process. Students
make and print multiple photogravures.
Media & Techniques: Digital SLR cameras;
lenses; tripod and remote cord; favorite gadgets; Adobe Lightroom to import, view and
critique images.
Media & Techniques: Digital SLR, digital image
making, image editing with Adobe Lightroom.
Skill Level: II & III
Activities: We take field trips to some of
the most beautiful nearby areas of the Rocky
Mountains with reflective lakes, ghost towns,
cascading streams and wildflowers. Class time
is given to image reviews and critiques.
Concept: The digital age is giving documentary
photographers and photojournalists extraordinary new ways to tell stories with greater
authorship and control. This workshop focuses
on how to create a personal documentary
project and get it seen. The ultimate goal is to
learn how to find a subject that speaks to a
personal passion, document it in a compelling
and unique visual style, and disseminate the
work effectively to change people’s minds and
help write history. Ed shows how to develop
an idea, get funding, determine goals and disseminate artwork to create an impact.
Activities: Expect discussions and practical
experience for richer storytelling, image editing and narrative development. Additional topics include managing digital work flow, creating multimedia projects, developing a portfolio
and disseminating work. Ed works personally
with students in the field.
Faculty: Stuart Klipper has made photographs

and around the world, including the Museum
of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of
Modern Art and the Art Institute of Chicago.
He has been the recipient of two Guggenheim
Foundation grants.
