Do song lyrics haunt you? What film awakened your senses? What material inspires you? “Variations” asks each student to choose personally topical themes inspired by literature, lyrics/music, photographs, film, food, etc., as a starting point to create new work. We then share our original sources of inspiration as well as our new works in the form of brief presentations and discussions throughout the session. The workshop culminates with each student presenting a final exhibition-ready work. Media & Techniques: This is a multidisciplinary workshop designed to challenge students to create both in and out of their comfort zone. Participants may use photography, drawing, sculpture, installation and video. This workshop will be held in the Photography studio. Activities:  Activities include daily presentations, studio work time, individual and group discussions and critiques. Faculty: Sanford Biggers uses the study of ethnological objects and popular icons to explore cultural and creative syncretism, art history and politics. Sanford often incorporates performative elements into his sculptures and installations, resulting in multilayered works. He has won the Creative Time Travel Grant, Creative Capital Project Grant and a Camille Hanks-Cosby Fellowship, among others. Sanford teaches in Virginia Commonwealth University’s Sculpture and Expanded Media program and was recently a visiting scholar at Harvard University.   www.sanfordbiggers.com Explorations in Photographic Output Mariana Vieira Skill level: II & III Concept:  How often does our digital capture end up in our computers? In this class, students explore new methods of creating images from digital files. We survey four processes that will take images out of the computer and into the world in new and exciting ways. Learn to print on canvas, create a ready-to-hang photo encaustic, make a self-published book and more! Media & Techniques:  Printing and stretching inkjet-ready canvas, photo encaustic, image transfer, image coloring, digital collages and digital bookmaking. Activities: Each day starts with a demonstration of a technique followed by work time with hands-on assistance. The last day of the workshop is used to finish projects and to revisit a technique. Faculty: Mariana Vieira received her MFA from the University of Colorado at Boulder where she was awarded the Graduate Instructor Teaching Award. Her work has appeared in national and international exhibitions.
