Spoken Figures
Debra Fritts
Skill Level: II - III
Concept: In figurative sculpture, as in so many
art forms, the challenge is reaching the “core,”
the spiritual connection between the maker
and the object. Come wrestle with this most
invigorating of challenges in a workshop that
focuses on sculpting from life and imagination. Working with wet clay—both coil and slab
construction—we use the figure as a vehicle
to express ideas and concerns. Debra encourages participants to go beyond portrayal and
reach inside to reveal personal questions and
feelings. Several sessions with the model and
working solid with the clay guide us to a better
understanding of gesture and proportions.
Media & Techniques: Red sculpture clay. Basic
handbuilding techniques, coil, pinch and slab
construction of the human form. Mark-making
and creating a painterly surface using slips,
oxides, underglazes and glazes.
Activities: Morning demonstrations each day
offer an in-depth look at different ways to build
a figure. Debra leads group discussions from
daily sketchbook activities. We build several figures: one from life (solid), one from imagination
(coil and slab), along with small gestural figures
to use for glaze tests and layering of glazes.
Manipulating Form,
Discovering Surface
Lorna Meaden
Skill Level: Open to all
Concept: “I am driven by the insatiable pursuit
of the good pot,” Lorna says. “The handmade
object serves as an illustration of the individual,
the unique and the useful.” Here is a focused
opportunity to make pots with specific function
and decorative surfaces. We explore a range of
forms, making simple pots for daily use such
as cups and bowls, in addition to expanding
typical ideas about utility. Demonstrations
for making include altering pots on and off
the wheel, as well as using drawn patterns
to handbuild spouts and handles. We explore
surfaces through texture, slip decoration and
glaze. The emphasis is on decoration, to create
pots where form and surface are inseparable.
Media & Techniques: Porcelain, white stoneware, soda- and wood-fired to cone 10. Throwing, altering and building with thrown parts.
Handbuilding spouts and handles with slabs.
Creating texture, slip inlay decoration and glaze
application techniques for soda firing
Activities: Demonstrations and lectures alternate with one-on-one instruction. We concentrate on making work, glazing and firing gassoda and wood-soda kilns.
Faculty: Debra Fritts is a studio artist working
in Roswell, Georgia and Abiquiu, New Mexico.
Her studies have concentrated on art education, painting and printmaking. She teaches
sculpture classes and conducts master classes
and workshops nationally.

the creative and educational programs of
the Ranch. We welcome online absentee
