making
Skill Level: Open to all
Skill Level: Open to all
Concept: Making pots with clay is a creative
expression of emotion, ideas and the self. This
workshop concentrates on touch, and how the
action of touch can create a physical and visual
language of expression. We work in terracotta, a
material well suited for an exploration of the role
of touch, one of the five senses, in making pottery. The teachers aim to guide students towards
making pottery that is, above all, personal.
Concept: Whether the subject is the languid
hare, the threatened canine or the contemplative goat, each study begins with observation.
Learn to read the bone and muscle structures
beneath skin or fur to discover gesture and
tension in the animal form. This workshop is
designed to expand each student’s tool bag of
skills and techniques and to learn specific techniques to transfer observations of the animal
world into expressive interpretations of life.
Take home a deeper understanding of animal
anatomy and form as well as new methods to
achieve artistic goals.
Thinking through Making
Media & Techniques: Terracotta clay, slips,
glazes, underglazes and terra sigillattas fired to
cone 1 in soda, electric and wood kilns. Coil
building and wheelthrowing.
Activities: Demonstrations, discussions and
lectures combined with individual instruction.
Historic and contemporary slide shows provide
plenty of inspiration and ideas for new concepts.
Faculty: Alleghany Meadows received his
MFA from Alfred University, studied with
Takashi Nakazato in Japan, and received a Watson Foundation Fellowship for study in Nepal.
He exhibits nationally and is the founder of
Artstream Nomadic Gallery and co-founder of
Harvey/Meadows Gallery in Aspen. His work
was acquired by the Museum of Fine Arts,
Houston, and the Huntington Museum of Art
in West Virginia.
Sam Harvey is co-founder of the Harvey/Meadows Gallery in Aspen. Sam earned his MFA from
Alfred University and is a generous supporter of
Anderson Ranch. He has worn many hats here:
as a studio manager in ceramics, summer intern,
winter resident, faculty, volunteer and donor.

The Animal Form
Media & Techniques: Terracotta clay, slips,
lowfire glazes fired to cone 05. Sculpture making techniques: additive and reductive, building
solid then hollowing out, throwing parts on the
wheel and attaching, darting and reattaching.
Activities: We work on at least three pieces
at one time, using various handbuilding techniques. By working in multiples we can move
between sculptures as they become leather
hard. We explore the commonality of anatomy
among animals and apply it to specific sculptural subject matter.
Faculty: Russell Wrankle, based in Toquerville, Utah, received his MFA from Southern
Illinois University in 1999. He exhibits, lectures and conducts workshops nationally. His
work is included in many private and permanent
