CONCEPT: Carry your passion for black & white photography
into the digital darkroom and create gallery-quality prints
that successfully present your photographic vision to the
world. Advances in digital technology have expanded both
the precision of imaging techniques and the interpretive possibilities for black & white imagery. This workshop provides
an opportunity to explore tools and techniques that enhance
your control over the final image and carry forth your personal
style and vision. At every stage in the capture, edit and print
workflow you are faced with numerous decisions that have
a cumulative impact on the technical quality and communicative power of your image. Learn how to identify and employ
the most appropriate hardware, software and media choices
to create expressive and long-lasting prints.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Photoshop CS3 and Lightroom (Macintosh); film scanners; Epson large-format inkjet printers; fine
art papers; monitor and printer calibration/profiling; image
evaluation; selective image editing with layer masks; capture
and output sharpening.
ACTIVITIES: Participants must bring a portfolio of 10-15 prints
(analog or digital) and a selection of negatives, slides or digital
files from which to select five or more images to create their
final portfolio. You will be applying the demonstrated techniques to your own images. Supervised editing sessions will
provide individual feedback. At the end of the workshop students present a portfolio of prints.
PREREQUISITES: This workshop is designed for experienced
photographers with a pre-existing body of work. Mac OS
X experience and familiarity with levels and curves adjustments required.
FACULTY: Amadou Diallo is a photographer, printmaker, digital
imaging consultant and author of Mastering Digital Black and
White: A Photographer’s Guide to High Quality Black-andWhite Imaging and Printing (2007, Thomson Course PTR). He
owns and operates Diallo Photography, a studio that offers
fine art printmaking and digital imaging workshops to a client
base from Brooklyn to Brazil. He is the host of the cable TV
series, “Digital Photo 360.” www.diallophotography.com
CONCEPT: The nude has been the most popular subject
throughout the history of art. It has also been the most
controversial. This workshop is about disrupting the body,
the human form. We will begin by challenging our preconceptions of this classic subject by looking at historical
concepts and uses of the body in art. We have so many
ideas of what a nude is supposed to look like, that one
of the most important and difficult challenges is putting
those aside to see the form that is actually in front of us.
Identifying our preconceptions of the body is the first step
to seeing this magnificent and rich subject in new ways
and with fresh eyes.
ACTIVITIES: The mornings will be full of discussions and critiques. In the afternoon we will photograph models on location working on specific assignments.
PREREQUISITES: The only prerequisite for this workshop is
a basic understanding of how to operate a camera (how to
adjust flash, shutter speed, aperture and ISO). You are welcome whether you’ve never photographed a nude or you use
the nude as a regular subject.
FACULTY: Connie Imboden currently teaches at the Maryland
Institute College of Art in Baltimore. Her work has been exhibited all over the world and is in the permanent collections
of many major museums including the National Academy of
Sciences, Washington DC, Galerie de Photographie, Bibliotheque Nationale de France. There are four monographs of
Imboden’s work and she is currently working on the fifth.

CONCEPT: This workshop is for photographers, digital artists
and other visual artists who have a collection of existing
images and want to publish them in a book. The workshop
explores the book as an art form in its own right as well as
a vehicle for the integration and presentation of images, text
and ideas. By examining the notion of the narrative, participants will learn how to create an extended and coherent
visual statement. In so doing, and by understanding the processes of editing, sequencing and book design, you will learn
how you can clarify the content of your images, to an audience, and more importantly to yourself.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: The workshop combines hands-on
bookmaking with computer-based design. By the end of the
workshop participants can expect to have a handmade proof
copy and a digi х
