Students will explore the idea of Public Service Announcements (PSAs) and then create their own personal video messages. We will look at ways of amplifying one’s own voice to express a powerful message. Looking at examples of PSAs, students will be asked: What do you think? Can you do better? What do you want to say? Our focus will be on video production, how to make a vision come to life, and editing techniques. This workshop is appropriate for the novice to the knowledgeable. June 16 - 20 Teen Painting & Drawing  MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Digital video camera (bring your own if you have one), video editing software (iMovie) and Apple computers will be provided. Camera techniques will include exposure, composition and lighting. Editing techniques will include transitions and continuity with emphasis in storytelling, acting, and directing as well. Kurt Van Dexter    Teens, 10:00 am - 3:30 pm Tuition: $420  Studio Fee: $50 Code: K0305  Enrollment Limit 10 CONCEPT:  Students will explore a variety of approaches to drawing and painting. Activities will include warm-up exercises for gesture-drawing, creating self-portraits, and working from direct observation. Working from nature will be emphasized in this workshop, and students will learn plant identification and other botanical/environmental knowledge. A variety of drawing and painting techniques will be presented. Major emphasis will be placed on individual attention, helping each student discover and capitalize on his/her natural talent. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Materials will include pencil, color pencil, conté, a variety of papers and board, acrylic, watercolor, various mixed media, glue, natural objects, and more. Techniques will include various approaches to drawing and watercolor, with a focus on shade, form, value, negative space, composition, and so on. ACTIVITIES: Each day will begin with a recap of the previous day’s lessons, and will include a demonstration or presentation, work time, clean-up, student presentations, critiques and a wrap-up. Presentations will be used as tools to help convey concepts. The class will take short hikes to on-site and nearby off-site locations. FACULTY:  Kurt Van Dexter is an artist, designer, registered landscape architect, and a certified K-12 visual arts educator. He combines each of these aspects of the art and design field in his work, much of which focuses on assisting and guiding teachers, students and communities in designing and creating school garden programs. Kurt is in private practice and works from the studios located in the barns of his farm. His paintings have been exhibited throughout the US, Japan, and Australia. ACTIVITIES:  Students will learn the different roles of video production. The days will start with a “production schedule” consisting of set-ups, rehearsals, shoots, re-takes, and dailies with the goal being for students to complete a few short 30-60 second PSAs.
