June 9 - 13
FACULTY: Shannon Boloña earned her BFA in Art and Art History from the University of Denver. She teaches at the Wyly
Community Art Center in Basalt, and this is her second year
at Anderson Ranch. Her passion for her own heritage has
inspired her to teach about Filipino culture through artmaking
and dance.
It’s Raining Meatballs!
Hilary Forsyth
Ages 6-8 years old, 9:00 - 11:30 am
Tuition: $230
Code: K0203 Enrollment Limit 14
June 16 - 20
CONCEPT: We will be working from the book Cloudy with a
Chance of Meatballs, by Judy Barrett, to learn how to tell a
story through art. In the book, a town gets its food through
the weather instead of from grocery stores. Big storms, thunder, rain, tornadoes, etc., start to occur and the townspeople
have to figure out how to cope. Students will start by developing their own story inspired by hers. The projects for the
week will all be developed from the story that each student
has created. Students will also look at the work of Wayne
Thiebaud and other artists who have used food as subject
matter in art.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students will create a series of 2D and
3D works that stem from this theme.
ACTIVITIES: Students will work with plaster cloth on a form;
learn collage and monoprinting techniques; learn soft and
hard sculpture techniques in felt and clay, and work with
fabric markers. Created work will include large plaster
cloth platters, small accordion books, food sculptures and
umbrella illustrations.
FACULTY: Hilary Forsyth is an art teacher and has been director of artistic programs at the Aspen Community School since
2003. She is co-owner of Bear Bop Press, LLC, and illustrator of
the book Family Field Guides: Rocky Mountain Mammals and
Rocky Mountain Plants and, in progress, Rocky Mountain Birds.
This will be Hilary’s fourth summer at Anderson Ranch.
Transportation & the Four
Elements
Kat Parkin
Ages 6-8 years old, 9:00 - 11:30 am
Tuition: $230
Code: K0304 Enrollment Limit 14
CONCEPT: How many ways do we move around the planet via
land, air, water, and space? Students will research the past,
present, and future of transportation and how transportation
impacts their daily lives. They will then design their own form
of transportation through printmaking, painting, collage, and
mixed media.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: A variety of mixed-media materials,
including found objects, will be used. Activities will involve
printmaking, painting, collage, and making 3D forms.
ACTIVITIES: Workshops will involve group discussions, looking
at books and videos, storytelling, and designing and creating
new forms of transportation.
FACULTY: Kat Parkin has been an art educator in the Aspen
area for more than ten years. Currently she teaches art and
skiing in the Roaring Fork Valley.
June 23 - 27
Imaginary Garden
Kurt Van Dexter
Ages 6-8 years old, 1:00 - 3:30 pm
Tuition: $230
Code: K0406 Enrollment Limit 14
CONCEPT: Using the familiar and nurturing concept of “the garden” as a theme, this workshop will be an introductory exploration in design, and will focus on the idea that art and design
can incorporate everything around you. We will go beyond
2D and 3D design, introducing students to the concept of
spatial design. Students will explore the art of nature, drawing and painting from direct observation both indoors and out.
Through examples from books and photographs, students
will be introduced to the idea of using plants and space to
create art. These concepts will ultimately be incorporated in a
final group-project titled “The Imaginary Garden.”
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students will be introduced to a
range of drawing and painting techniques. Materials will
include watercolor, acrylic, pencil, color pencil, marker, and
mixed media, such as found objects. Students will learn
techniques relating to form and volume, line-quality, flat
color application, color mixing, sculptural applications, and
assemblage.
June 9 - 13
Filipino Fun: traditional dance and
designs
Shannon Boloña
Ages 6-8 years old, 1:00 - 3:30 pm
Tuition: $230
Code: K0202 Enrollment Limit 14
CONCEPT: Immerse yourself in the art and ideas of another
culture. Students will learn about vibrant Filipino traditions
by looking at actual Filipino art, customs, and artifacts and
then creating their own dolls to reflect traditional costumes. By studying traditional attire and jewelry, students
will have a chance to make a doll from papier-mâché and
then design its costume. Students will also practice and
learn a traditional dance that they will perform together at
the end of the week.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Papier-mâché, sketchbooks, paint, collage and traditional drawing techniques.
ACTIVITIES: Each day will begin with a recap of the previous
day’s lessons, and will include a demonstration or presentation, work time, clean-up, student presentations, critiques
and a wrap-up. Presentations will be used as tools to help
convey concepts.
FACULTY: Kurt Van Dexter is an artist, designer, registered
landscape architect, and a certified K-12 visual arts educator. He combines each of these aspects of the art and
design field in his work, much of which focuses on gu iding
teachers, students, and communities to design and create sustainable school garden programs. Kurt is in private
practice, and works from the studios located in the barns
on his farm. His paintings have been exhibited throughout
the US, Japan and Australia.
ACTIVITIES: A live performance of a dance called Tinikling will
inspire children to learn the steps and gain appreciation for a
unique traditional art form. They will perform the dance for
parents on the final day of class.
