CONCEPT: This workshop will explore the expressive potential
of bamboo in the objects of everyday life. Beginning with a
survey of traditional applications, students will be encouraged
to explore and develop their own contemporary understanding of bamboo’s material traits. A series of short projects
will help expand the design potential of this unique material
beyond tradition and cliché. We’ll explore structural qualities,
surface design and connection types. Students will then create a series of projects that range in scale from housewares
to small furniture objects.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: The workshop will offer instruction in
traditional bamboo and rattan construction and basketry techniques, and will also utilize some traditional woodworking
techniques.
ACTIVITIES: Slide lectures and demonstrations on techniques
will complement a rigorous workshop experience designed
to explore this extraordinary, ecologically “green” material.
PREREQUISITES: Students are expected to bring a proficiency
in visually articulating ideas, some shop/”making” skills, and
a desire to explore and experiment.
FACULTY: Thomas Huang received an MFA from the furniture
program at the Rhode Island School of Design, and was recently
named a Searchlight Artist by the American Craft Council. He
studied traditional bamboo splitting techniques with contemporary basketry artist, Jiro Yonezawa. A professor of industrial
design at the University of Kansas, his furniture and sculpture
have been exhibited at the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, Wexler Gallery in Philadelphia, and Shidoni Foundries
and Galleries in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Judy Kensley-McKie, Monkey Chair
CONCEPT: In music, sampling is the process of taking a portion, or sample, of one sound recording and reusing it as an
instrument or element of a new recording. In this workshop,
sampling is the process of taking snippets of life and reusing them as source material for new ideas in creating mixedmedia furniture and sculpture. During the final week of the
workshop, Judy Kensley-McKie will be working independently
in the nearby Visiting Artist Studio. Judy, a premier figure in
the American studio furniture movement, is the recipient of
the Renwick Alliance Master of the Medium award as well as
the Furniture Society’s Award of Distinction. Judy and Wendy
will discuss their work, their history and their influences in a
public conversation at the end of the week.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Wood and mixed media. This is a concept-driven workshop and techniques will be demonstrated
based on individual interests and need. Wood is the primary
material but students are encouraged to incorporate other
media.
PREREQUISITES: Designed for intermediate/advanced furniture makers or sculptors with experience working in wood
and with woodworking machinery.
FACULTY: Wendy Maruyama, a professor at San Diego State
University, has been teaching and making furniture for 27
years. She is the recipient of many awards, including an NEA
grant, a fellowship from the Japan/US Friendship Commission, and a Fulbright and has exhibited widely in the US and
abroad. Her newest work incorporates video and digital photography in traditional and not-so-traditional furniture forms.
Judy Kensley-McKie has been making critically-acclaimed and
widely-exhibited work for over 25 years. She is recognized
as a premiere figure in the American studio furniture movement and has received numerous awards, including: the
Furniture Society’s Award of Distinction in 2005, the James
Renwick Alliance Master of the Medium Award (2005), a Tiffany Foundation a nd NEA grants. Her work is infused with a
lively awareness of modernist and contemporary art and the
approaches to design found in indigenous cultures throughout the world.
