She is the past president and co-founder of Seattle Print Arts, a nonprofit professional organization for artists, and in 2006 received a Behnke Foundation Neddy Fellowship award for printmaking. Designed to allow for exploration across mediums (intaglio, woodcut, lithography, silkscreen), the workshop will culminate in the creation of either a portfolio or a suite of prints with a thematic link. Those who know printmaking and are seduced by it will have an opportunity to get more deeply involved, and those new to it will discover how mark making and print complexity can open up exciting new possibilities for your own work. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Intaglio, woodcut techniques and aluminum plate lithography, as well as chine collé. Use of glues and pastes, rubber stamps and some 3D implementation, if desired. ACTIVITIES:  Morning demonstrations and discussion with afternoon and evening hours for studio work. Brief slide presentations. One-on-one instruction. PREREQUISITES:  All levels are welcome. Skilled printmakers may work at their own pace and, along with others, produce a portfolio or suite at the end of the workshop. FACULTY: Lynn Allen is a Tamarind master printer whose current focus is intaglio and woodcut. She is director of the school of visual arts at Boston University, and the former director of the Rutgers Center for Innovative Print and Paper (now the Brodsky Center). Her works are collected in the Library of Congress, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the MoMA Library, the New York Public Library and elsewhere. August 18 - 22 Experiments in Print: combining Hiroki Morinoue, Earth Watch Catherine Brooks    CONCEPT: Students will be taken through various carving and printing exercises that are designed to develop appreciation and understanding of the technical and esthetic qualities of traditional and modern Japanese woodcut prints. Tuition: $725  Studio Fee: $75 Code: R1312  Enrollment Limit 11 MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: We’ll establish a basic knowledge of papers (washi), types of woods commonly used in Japan, registration marks (kento), and step-by-step preparation for printing that will help students become more efficient in the process. Catherine Brooks, Sycamore Ring (detail) CONCEPT: Glean magical secrets about intaglio line work from a master printer, while developing images in copper plate et ching and engraving. Copper is a soft and receptive material that can be worked with directly for expressive and subtle results. It can also be treated with ground and acid for more refined effects. Work in the studio or prepare your plates for work outside, en plein air. After marking the metal, learn the traditional printing method of hand wiping to reveal the information held below the surface of the plate. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: We’ll use the same materials Rembrandt used for his etchings and experience the sensual qualities of copper and grounds. ACTIVITIES:  Technical instruction. demonstrations and ACTIVITIES: Moku hanga demonstrations, and demonstrations using students’ woodblocks to illustrate or emphasize various color and design problems. Work sessions, group discussion, critiques. PREREQUISITES:  Students with some experience in relief printing. FACULTY:  Hiroki Morinoue introduced moku hanga at the Ranch over 12 years ago, and has collaborated with other Ranch artists. His work is in collections at the Hawaii State Museum, the Honolulu Academy of Arts, the Contemporary Museum of Hawaii, the Ueno No Mori Museum of Tokyo, the National Parks Collection in Maryland, and the De Young Museum print collection. personal PREREQUISITES: Open to curious beginners as well as experienced printmakers. FACULTY: Catherine Brooks is a Crown Point Press master printer and author of Magical Secrets about Line Etching and Engraving: The Step-by-Step Art of Incised Lines. She has an art practice that includes printmaking, painting and accessory design. digital and hand-drawn media Barbara Robertson    Tuition: $775  Studio Fee: $75 Code: R1211  Enrollment Limit 11 Barbara Robertson, Structure Blue (detail) CONCEPT:  This print workshop will focus on the expressive possibilities and visual dialogue that can occur when photographic and hand-drawn images are combined in unexpected ways. Students will generate digital images from multiple sources, including scanned photographs, drawings and objects. These will then be combined in the studio with drawing, etching and/or relief prints, resulting in richly layered works on paper that reflect the dynamic nature of this creative process.
