Etching & Engraving: scratching
the surface
Lynne Allen, They were as numerous as grass
CONCEPT: Whether you’re a beginner, experienced with a particular technique but ready to learn another, or simply wish
to expand upon your skills, this workshop will get you going
with individualized guidance. Designed to allow for exploration across mediums (intaglio, woodcut, lithography, silkscreen), the workshop will culminate in the creation of either
a portfolio or a suite of prints with a thematic link. Those who
know printmaking and are seduced by it will have an opportunity to get more deeply involved, and those new to it will
discover how mark making and print complexity can open up
exciting new possibilities for your own work.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Intaglio, woodcut techniques and
aluminum plate lithography, as well as chine collé. Use of
glues and pastes, rubber stamps and some 3D implementation, if desired.
ACTIVITIES: Morning demonstrations and discussion with
afternoon and evening hours for studio work. Brief slide presentations. One-on-one instruction.
PREREQUISITES: All levels are welcome. Skilled printmakers
may work at their own pace and, along with others, produce
a portfolio or suite at the end of the workshop.
FACULTY: Lynn Allen is a Tamarind master printer whose current focus is intaglio and woodcut. She is director of the
school of visual arts at Boston University, and the former
director of the Rutgers Center for Innovative Print and Paper
(now the Brodsky Center). Her works are collected in the
Library of Congress, the Whitney Museum of American Art,
the Victoria & Albert Museum, the MoMA Library, the New
York Public Library and elsewhere.

and understanding of the technical and esthetic qualities of
traditional and modern Japanese woodcut prints.
Tuition: $725 Studio Fee: $75
Code: R1312 Enrollment Limit 11
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: We’ll establish a basic knowledge of
papers (washi), types of woods commonly used in Japan,
registration marks (kento), and step-by-step preparation for
printing that will help students become more efficient in
the process.

CONCEPT: Glean magical secrets about intaglio line work from
a master printer, while developing images in copper plate
et ching and engraving. Copper is a soft and receptive material that can be worked with directly for expressive and subtle
results. It can also be treated with ground and acid for more
refined effects. Work in the studio or prepare your plates for
work outside, en plein air. After marking the metal, learn the
traditional printing method of hand wiping to reveal the information held below the surface of the plate.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: We’ll use the same materials Rembrandt used for his etchings and experience the sensual
qualities of copper and grounds.
ACTIVITIES: Technical
instruction.
demonstrations
and

using students’ woodblocks to illustrate or emphasize various color and design problems. Work sessions, group discussion, critiques.

CONCEPT: This print workshop will focus on the expressive
possibilities and visual dialogue that can occur when photographic and hand-drawn images are combined in unexpected ways. Students will generate digital images from
multiple sources, including scanned photographs, drawings
and objects. These will then be combined in the studio with
drawing, etching and/or relief prints, resulting in richly layered
works on paper that reflect the dynamic nature of this creative process.
