Students will have time to develop ideas through drawing, maquettes and individual instruction. The first two to three days will be clay work with the remainder of the week devoted to paint, collage and printmaking. Graphic Fashions: screen printed  Hilary Forsyth    Ages 9-12 years old, Mon. - Fri., 1:30 - 4:00 pm Tuition: $250 Code: K0304  Enrollment Limit 14 CONCEPT:  Ever dreamed of creating your own awesome t-shirt design? Want to learn how to enhance and add patterns to clothing and fabric? In this workshop, students will gain experience in textile screen printing techniques, and learn methods such as monoprinting, stenciling and burning an image to a screen. Students will experiment with different patterns and shapes to make all-over designs and work on bold, individual graphics. Students should bring t-shirts and other garments on which to print their images. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students will create stencils for screen printed designs and experiment with photo transfer techniques used in screen printing. They will print on paper and fabric and make usable and wearable art such as t-shirts, sewn bags, pockets, scarves, etc. Students will look at artwork from other artists who have used screen printing as their primary art form such as pop artist Andy Warhol. Students may also choose to learn basic techniques on a sewing machine towards the end of the week. ACTIVITIES: Students will be working with water-based screen printing supplies, including ink, squeegees, frames, stenciling material, photo emulsion materials, thread, glue, a sewing machine and X-acto knives. FACULTY: Hilary Forsyth is the art director at the Aspen Community School. She built the art program from scratch five years ago and has taught there for six years. Last year, she received the Mary Ellen Nix Award for Excellence in Teaching Art from the Red Brick Center for the Arts. Hilary is also coowner and illustrator of The Family Field Guide Series: Rocky Mountain Mammals, Rocky Mountain Plants, Rocky Mountain Birds. In June 2009, expect to see Rocky Mountain Insects. FACULTY: K Rhynus Cesark has taught art to children and adults for over 15 years. She is currently a studio artist who lives in Carbondale, Colorado, with her husband and two young boys. She obtained her MFA from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston and has received a fellowship from the Colorado Council on the Arts for her work in ceramic sculpture. The Art of Tea:for fun and fantasy K Rhynus Cesark    Ages 9-12 years old, Mon. - Fri., 1:30 - 4:00 pm Tuition: $250 Code: K0405  Enrollment Limit 14 CONCEPT: Get ready to explore and tell a story through the rich art of teapots. First, students will take a journey through tea history and see the importance of tea as it crosses many cultures. Then they will create elaborate ceramic teapots from their imagination or from reality. From ancient China to the present, from function to sculpture, students will discover the vast visual language that is expressed through teapots. Using the teapot as a starting point, students will tell their own stories through clay, paint, collage, printmaking and sculpture. This class offers something for everyone—whether you love alligators or horses, football or ballet—come create a teapot that inspires you!
