What are the formal terms we use to describe form and space and how have these conventions evolved in the post-modern world of making? How do we include meaningful content in our work, while at the same time sharpen our understanding of the fundamental nature of form, and our ability to successfully manipulate it? This one-week intensive offers the student a formal understanding of two- and three-dimensional form and space, and introduces various creative processes to help students identify the best means by which they can imbue their work with compelling ideas and content. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students will be challenged to use simple materials like paper, cardboard, wire, wood and found objects to make meaningful two-and three-dimensional work through drawing, the manipulation of 2D imagery, and simple 3D construction methods. ACTIVITIES:  Mornings include informal lectures and discussions, screenings, and creative exercises that attune our bodies and minds for the day’s work. Daily projects are assigned and given with appropriate demos, and students work individually and collaboratively in the afternoons with instructor supervision. FACULTY:  Fo Wilson’s work uses the language of furniture to investigate ideas around identity, culture, and the human experience. She graduated with an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design’s Furniture Design program and is currently an Assistant Professor at the Peck School of the Arts at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. Prior to her graduate studies, she ran her own graphic design consultancy with offices in New York and the San Francisco Bay area and has taught at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, as well as the California College of Art (formerly CCAC) and Parsons School of Design in New York. www.fowilson.com July 27 - 31 Exploring Pop Culture through Mixed Media Don Fritz    Jovi Schnell    *See page 13 for a full workshop description August 3 - 7 Digital to Physical:rhythm and sound Robin Mandel & Ali Momeni    Jovi Schnell, Ode to Pluto-Fuge in Minor Planet #134340 (detail) *See page 22 for a full workshop description August 24 - 28 Book Arts:volumes, relics and curiosity Robin Mandel, Suitcase (installation detail) *See page 16 for a full workshop description Daniel Essig    Tuition: $675  ARAC Actual Cost: $875  Studio Fee: $100 Code: W1328  Enrollment Limit 8 August 10 - 14 Paper Clay:a sculptural approach Rebecca Hutchinson    Daniel Essig, N’kisi Bricolage - Trout (detail) Rebecca Hutchinson, Untitled (installation detail) *See page 42 for a full workshop description August 17 - 21 Book Arts:rock, paper, wood Daniel Essig    Tuition: $675  ARAC Actual Cost: $875  Studio Fee: $100 Code: W1227  Enrollment Limit 8 CONCEPT:  Until fairly recently, all books were prized possessions—medieval libraries chained books to the shelves to prevent theft. In this workshop, students will learn to create a niche to protect and display a small relic. Working with power and hand tools, students will shape wood as well as explore textured and pai nted surfaces. The class will cover the unique qualities of natural mica as an element in your project. This workshop is also designed to allow students from the workshop, “Rock, Paper, Wood”, to build upon their new book skills and techniques creating a more sculptural form, or for students to explore the idea of including found objects within their work. This workshop is open to book artists, woodworkers, and the curious alike. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students will be carving and shaping wood with power and hand tools, texturing and painting wood with milkpaints, and learning how to use mica. ACTIVITIES: The day will consist of demonstrations and presentations with ample time to work. FACULTY: See Daniel Essig’s bio on this page. Students will use an array of binding techniques that take advantage of the unique properties of each material. The mica we will use is intended for lampshades, consisting of finely-flaked mica formed into a sheet with shellac. In addition to using commercially available paper, students will use handmade papers designed for longevity and strength. As wood was once the predominant material for book covers, students will recreate a 4th-century wooden binding that is still in use today. By using these three elements in combination and alone, students will increase their vocabulary of materials and their choice of bindings. This workshop is open to book artists, woodworkers and the curious alike. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Alternative materials for book bindings including sewn board, supported and hinged.
