What makes a pot “good”? Why do some pots beg to be used or hold their visual presence years after their making? This workshop will help students understand the answers to some of these questions. This class will focus on the underlying organizational strategies that exist in all pots. Students will explore the architectural nature of the vessel; how line, proportion, geometry, ratio, scale and volume all play a role in the final pot. They will learn how these relationships combine to create structure, metaphor and meaning in pottery form and decoration. CONCEPT: In this workshop students will make symbolic sculptures composed of different ceramic modules. Some will be abstract, geometric shapes, like cones or spheres; others will be narrative, symbolic figures, like clouds, shells, flowers, hands, birds and fishes. All the modules will be made as individual, serial pieces. Made one by one, with no reference to their final destination, these components are intended to be letters of an alphabet or notes of a song.
