Photo of Sarah Howard in printmaking studio CONCEPT:  Students will explore photogravure using digital films and direct gravure from hand-drawn positives. This is an opportunity for artists to explore the traditional process of gravure, using the control and capabilities of digital technology or the direct and gestural immediacy of the hand-drawn mark. Using these approaches, students will experience the immense fidelity of gravure in realizing continuous tone images through a non-silver process, producing some of the richest, most velvety tones of ink on paper. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Digital workflow of input, image manipulation, output of digital film positives; gravure techniques sensitizing, exposure, lay-down, development of carbon tissue, etching process; and preparation of the plates for printing, inking and wiping techniques and paper handling. Students are highly encouraged to come prepared with a laptop computer. FACULTY: Beauvais Lyons is professor of art at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. As director of the Hokes Archives, his artistic practice involves various forms of mock-academics: fabricating and documenting imaginary archeology, biography, folk art medicine, and creation science. His prints are in the collections of the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of Art.
